While browsing, I try to refrain from learning the title to interpret what I can on an instant's basis - hats off to thee for creating a piece that conveyed yourself in an "idealistic" manner ( ideals in a realistic way). Mental interpretation aside, visual aspects capture your field of vision at every angle and shade. The color palate makes my mind think of Autumn/fall, or an ending of a bright era (Summer). Through The Looking Glass brings to mind a scene filled with Nature, so the change in the scene's setting adds more emphasis to the change in era of the Hatter. I can see there was deep thought behind this idea and execution of it. May I inquire as to the origins of this piece's idea?

Thanks for the comment, you've very kind! As with most of my work this picture is an expression of personal stuff, dressed in the theatrical garb of universal myths and stories (with probably a bit of random nonsense thrown in for good measure). I've always liked the character of the Mad Hatter, and given the fairytale slant in much of my work I'm surprised he hasn't cropped up before this. Coincidentally my home town of Stockport has a history of hat making (my local football team is even known as the Hatters). The phrase 'mad as a hatter' has it's origins in the days when hatters would often develop mental health issues due to mercury poising - although the phrase broadly relates to people being crazy. What is causing the Hatter's decline, his descent into madness? Is it the fumes rising from his psychedelic brew? Why are all the other toys eyeing up the slutty rag doll with her legs spread, yet the Hatter stares out of the picture to some unseen oblivion? Who is the mysterious hare hiding at the top of the staircase? Who are the satanic figures in the window yonder, and what about the figure on the bridge staring into the stream below? Too many questions. As ever it's up to the viewer to make their own sense out of the madness - I'm keeping quiet!
