Great work! I saw the movie and you just captured the character of the dude. He was not glamorous and world weary and you got it. Nice use of an alternative medium. Have you ever tried using a sand medium. I used it on a piece of Keith Richards, made him look rougher.I like the use of alternative mediums they enhance the paintings.

You have to drink every time "The Dude" makes this face in the movie.

Is acrylic paste like clay at all or how do you work with it? : 0

"Well, you know, that's like huh, your opinion, man." This portrait is awesome! I absolutely love hoiw you did the beard. I assume the Acrylic Modeling Paste is what turned the texture that way? Because if it is, I absolutely have to try this out!

Ha! Just look at the continence of his BROW; Jeff meeeeeaaaanssss it, doesn't he? This might sound uhm, a bit, "gushy", but if I think of Jeff Bridges' career, and his talent and how it has grown and changed really it is not unlike yours. So this pic is so self revealing I think. Maybe more so than people know. That or I am completely high.
Either way, David, my talented as HELL friend, here is to GETTING IT ALL OUT!!!!

Cheers!

Jen

Hey wow! You are wayyyyyyyyyy too nice=But Ill take it! Maybe it is subconsiously a self Portrait=because I often feel "Hey-WTF is going on here-moannn"haaaaa.. I like the image and wanted to do an impasto, and it didnt hurt that at the same show were having a print release of the other Lebowski painting=so it fit as far as marketing, too.. The film/image is a SoCal locally worshipped image and thats where the show is=so Yeah=Its half "sellout" and half passion.Of course Ill lie and say its "totalpassion" but hey..do I look fat in these jeans?..No?? LIE!haaaaaa

Love his "fear of the unknown" speech=we all go through it, and its usually the best of times. Larkin told me "Your stuff is good and pretty strange, and no offense Dave, but you need to get stranger." Those words echo in my head alot. Its satisfying to stay safe in a productive comfort zone that "works", but that rebellious urge to make something unique on canvas- by surgically tearing it out of yourself- is absolutely necessary to clear the cobwebs of conformity. I always loved the ones that had the spirit to crash and burn=They always do it so lovely YOU-my friend-often push those freedom buttons. Damn-I should do it more often

You know, the truth of it for me is, if an image or an approach to an image lingers to the point where I can't ignore it anymore, I'll sit down and get it done, whether anyone ever sees the results or not-- I think it's probably similar to the fact that you're actually seeing millions of things a day, and unlikely juxtapositions of those things every day, but your peculiar self ends up dreaming about just a few of those things every night; I think, given how short our time here really is, you gotta cede the time to the things that persist for you, whether that's an image, or a technique for visualizing that image...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

davidmacdowell In reply to SRaffa [2011-04-12 21:25:46 +0000 UTC]

Right, as long as it gets out "by any means necessary"! I have a laundry list of what images I "need" to create, and more excited about exploring the technique more than the subject matter. This image of a movie star lessens the "art" intended=if it was a vague stranger it would be deemed more impressive..ahhhh-Its the sex & cash theory in full effect [link] shameless parttime whore that I am

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SRaffa In reply to davidmacdowell [2011-04-12 21:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Concisely put!
Watching your technique grow and expand over the past few years has been hugely thrilling; I'm also a huge fan of your more "personal" paintings from earlier times; if there's someone who's found a way to legitimately inhabit both worlds without damaging compromises, I think that's you, brother.
Having said that, I'd love to see what the thoughts that led up to paintings as personal as The Giving Tree and Bubblegum might lead to, given the X-Men danger room training your technique has been purified by-- given the Beatles in Hamburg, Germany training your hand has acquired!

davidmacdowell In reply to SRaffa [2011-04-15 19:30:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh man-Youre really making my head expand with the Beatles comparison Older pieces had their own timely intentions, sometimes birthed from rebellous intention{as all young artists have}..Art is like the music industry=I have my top-ten "hits" and sometimes pieces barely break the top 100.. Im trying to caver too many genre's instead of being just one band,is the problem. Gallerys want you to be an old reliable /never changing name brand like "Doritos"..I feel sad and frustrated for the ones that never can change/grow because they bloomed too quickly..Once Led Zepplin adopted a disco beat..it was all over..haaaaa
