While silent half the time around people, Devin often masks his interest in conversation with a blank expression. He doesn't actually care much for others outside of work, making him rather difficult to approach if the person can't deal with his sarcastic remarks and smartass attitude. He thinks of himself as someone who has difficulty forming connections with others. He seems to prefer to be alone, but doesn't mind company as long as they're not overly noisy or bug him too much. He keeps his emotions in check unless a person really strikes a nerve. He doesn't always trust others, but when he does, he is extremely loyal.
He is serious about the job, and even when he has some break time, he's always on his toes in case anything happens. Though highly introverted on his own, Devin comes up with rather interesting ideas when asked to talk about them. He is the type to consider different events that may possibly end up as fallback to a plan. However, he is in no way a leader, and not always the best at being offensive, but he does excel at scouting ahead.
Another thing to note is that he has a slight case of insomnia, and stays up rather late, but he tries not to let this get in the way of his job, and actually tries really hard to correct it. if asked about it, he would almost always dodge the topic.
Biography:
Devin grew up in Basildon in a relatively normal household with his older brother. Their parents were extremely busy with their jobs and as such, Devin was more attached to his brother than anyone else. When he turned eight, he started seeing things that kept him up at night, and it was during these times he would go to his brother for comfort. Instead of being weirded out, the brother was interested in these invisible beings, which in turn brought them closer together. This became a secret between them, and it wasn't like their parents suspected much since they weren't home all the time.
When Devin was 13 and his brother was 14, an attempt at a family outing with their parents resulted in a car accident that to this day Devin swears was caused by one of those shadows, weird entities, Outliers, but he personally called them nightmares. He lost his brother in the event, and later his parents after being admitted to a hospital.
He was taken in by a foster family after recovering physically from the accident, and they treated him with a lot of care, but there really was no replacing his lost family, least of all his brother. He kept mostly to himself from then on, and tried extremely hard to ignore the shadows that happened to peek from behind furniture or around corners when he walked outside, and had difficulty sleeping in fear of reliving the nightmare of the accident or facing the shadows only he could see. Though he liked his foster parents, he couldn't bring himself to really tell them his secrets and thoughts, for fear of getting kicked out and ending up alone again.
At school he was often ridiculed and teased for being silent and sometimes ridiculed for his ideas of creatures that might be there but are unable to be seen, referring to his situation indirectly. It took a harsh PE class and athletic program (particularly track) to tell him that he was a survivor, and that he shouldn't always remain passive. From there it escalated- he gained more confidence in himself and became more aggressive, came home later than he used to. He became part of a small, young gang that often used him to scout areas before vandalising them with spray paint and the like, for the fun of it, and the experience. He wouldn't consider them good friends though, but rather he forced his way in there through a bit of blackmail. He needed a place to fit in, and he thought it was appropriate at the time.
For a short while he pushed the shadows to the back of his mind, until another incident occurred. He encountered an Outlier that was being taken care of by an individual who could definitely see the same things he could, and from there Devin found his way to Lethe.
Likes:
- Sour things. You'll sometimes find him drinking lemon juice that isn't too diluted with sugar.
- Cold weather. This gives him the excuse to wrap himself a bit more, which he actually likes doing.
- Small animals. Sometimes he'll stare at the other small familiars.
- Hot chocolate is the best thing.
- Quiet people who don't disturb him when he's occupied.
- Jogging in his free time.
Dislikes:
- Coffee or Red Bull or any of those crazy drinks that are designed to keep people awake.
- Warm weather. It sucks to be running around, dressed up, under the sun.
- Noisy people who scream at the top of their lungs or annoy him in general.
- Authority being forced on him.
- Being completely alone.
Additional Info:
- He's still on good terms with his step mom and dad, and visits them occasionally, when he can.
- He has good memory, so if you say something really suspicious or weird, he's going to keep it in mind.
