“Aberrant Geist...?” Octavia mused to herself as she turned the page of the journal that once belonged to her father. The journal itself was priceless to Octavia, both for sentimental reasons as well as the number of case files and information within, detailing many of her father’s works.
Across her, Calia slid a freshly brewed coffee towards her. “Annoying vermin, those ones,” Calia indicated towards the page regarding the Aberrant Geist.
“You know of them?” Octavia asked as she took a sip of her coffee, nodding her thanks to Calia.
"Hunted a few of them in the past. Last one I hunted was some years ago in Scotland." Calia replied.
“Really? What were they like?”
Calia paused for a bit, a hand reaching to rest under her chin as she formed a reply.
“Inconsistent is the word that comes to mind. Just like other beings that spawn from the Otherworlds, the form they take varies. The ones I hunted all had different appearances and characteristics, but one thing they share in common is that they all looked like something that tried to mimic creatures existing in our world but ended up taking those physical traits and putting them into a blender.”
"Sounds like a messed-up version of build-a-bear. It says here that they’re normally not strong enough to traverse the Veil and enter our plane of existence,” Octavia referred to a highlighted entry within the journal.
“Apparently it’s because they are at the bottom of whatever hierarchy the Otherworlds has. Doesn't mean they’re easy to deal with, however. In the past, one Geist was known to wipe out villages and settlements. Even with the advent of newer weapons as well as arcane spells, dealing with one is an extreme challenge.”
Calia leaned on the counter as she gathered her thoughts to continue. "As for how they break through the Veil, it’s usually the common case. You got a reckless idiot with gifts for mystical arts trying to peer into the Otherworlds. At times there are those who summon them thinking they’re strong enough to bind them to their will which ends up in an enraged Geist and a whole pile of corpses in its wake.”
“Any weaknesses?” Octavia inquired.
“While they are hard to kill and resistant even to magic, fire seems to work well against them as well as weapons infused with arcane or divine qualities. The sword bound to you is a prime example of such a weapon. In some cases in the past, when they found themselves unskilled or unable to kill the Geist, they would bound the Geist and send it back into the Otherworlds. You’ve seen stone henges before? Those were examples of banishing sites.”
Octavia let out a sigh and took another sip of her coffee. "I can’t really build a stone henge with the flick of a hand, especially if a Geist is on my tail. Guess if I ever need help with sending something back to the Otherworlds, I can give Providence a call.”
Calia chuckled at that. “I wouldn’t be surprised with him being capable of doing so. When it comes to matters concerning the planes beyond, he’s more experienced.”
Octavia could feel the card in her pocket, the one that allowed her to call upon Providence.
“That he is”
