I don't know what it is about the vast sea and oceans, but ever since I was a child, I've always dreamed of studying the vast world that lies beneath. It is what inspired me to pursue a career as a marine biologist. I persevered and poured my soul in making it a reality and after years of hard work and dedication, I managed to achieve that dream. I have been working as a marine biologist ever since then.
Something interesting happened a couple of months ago when I received an e-mail from an unknown contact. Within it are countless data monitoring what seemed to be the Mariana trench. With growing awe and excitement, I realized it was tracking what seemed to be a multitude of sea life making their way to the Mariana Trench, all coming in from vast distances. Attached to the e-mail was a note offering me the task of exploring this rather unusual phenomena. Equipment such as dive gear and transportation was to be provided, on top of that was a wage that made my jaw drop. This.... This was something out of my wildest and greatest dreams, a chance to do something that I love. Without further delay, I responded and accepted the job and two weeks later I was ready to plunge into the Trench.
Other than me, I had enlisted the help of a captain in guiding me as well as bringing along the necessary equipment for the dive, this included a rather fortified diving gear as well as a one-man piloted submersible. both were designed for withstanding the crushing pressure of the deep. After some last minute check up and prep, I finally started my long descent.
There is something otherworldly about diving to such depths. And as I went further down and light soon faded, I marveled at the alien world that existed below. Following the migration pattern that was provided in the data sent to me I traversed further still until I finally reached the end of the trail and I gaped at the sight that lay before me.
It was a cavern and as I looked around, I could see scores of fishes and various other marine life making their way towards it, even spotting a whale much to my extreme astonishment. They could dive deep, but to this depth is rarely seen. As I stared at the cavern ahead, a growing sense of wonder and excitement clutched at me until I made up my mind. After putting on the diving gear provided to me, I exited the submersible and made my way to the cavern.
Through the pitch black depths, I made my way. The high power flashlight in my hand cut a cone of light in the darkness. I marveled at the myriad of sea life that journeyed alongside me. I felt like a fellow pilgrim as I followed them as we headed towards an unknown destination. After what seemed to be an eternity, I noticed a faint glow further ahead. Drawing closer I noticed they were what seemed to be bio luminescent seaweeds and fishes.
I came to a stop at what seemed to be a rather deep drop. I stood at the end of the cliff, taking a momentary pause. I noticed the whale had arrived as well and in stunned silence, I watched as it slowly came to a stop before laying still on the cavern floor. I looked it in the eye and for a moment, it held my gaze before it slowly closed its eyes. It took me another moment to realize that it had died. Slow realization came to me as I looked all around me. Littered all around the cavern were hundreds, no, maybe thousands of skeletal remains, too many to count. they varied from whale to shark, to remains I didn't even recognize, and I prided myself in knowing a large amount of marine life.
An article I read before came to mind, about an ancient mass graveyard found in Siberia that contained mammoth bones as well as plenty of other ancient species. As I took in my surrounding, It dawned on me that I stood upon such a site. In solemn silence I knelt by one of the remains, brushing away at some of the sediments and placing a hand on the skull. What stories could such an amazing place hold.
My moment of silent passed when I heard a deep sound that snapped me back to reality. It was a strange sound in that it reminded me of a whale's call but this was deeper and ended in a rather higher pitch sound. It took me a moment to realize that the sound was emanating from the cliff drop. I turned towards it, noticing as well that the gathering of sea life were coalescing around and above it. The long sound came again, this time even louder and I realized that it was drawing closer.
I don't know why I didn't turn and run, I had all the time to flee the place and escape that which was coming. But something bade me to stay, whether it was fear that root me to the spot or overwhelming need to know what lurks in the deep. All I know is that I stood there, the sound drawing ever closer.... and closer.... and closer.... And as I stood upon that cliff's edge, the sound reached a crescendo and up from the murky abyss it emerged.
I don't remember much of what happened next as I drifted in and out of consciousness. It would be days later when I awoke in a hospital. From what I gathered, the captain told his account of how I had returned from the Trench, delirious and speaking gibberish. I had visitors, claiming to be representatives of the organization that had enlisted my help. They grilled me for answers as to what had happened and what I saw down there. Recordings from the camera attached to my diving suit had apparently turned to static before I had reached the cavern and any audio recordings were muted. They asked again and again, and my answer was simply I did not know or could not remember. They finally gave up grudgingly, however they did uphold their end of the deal and left me with my wages for the job. After a couple more days I was finally released from the hospital and returned home.

It's been months now...... But I still see her.... Whenever I enter sleep's embrace I hear her calling to me with that haunting melody of her's.... What transpires in those dream moments I cannot clearly say.... We communicate in manners that transcend words and gestures.....
Perhaps I did go mad in the Trench..... I don't know what she is.... Not really.... She's been here for quite a long time now. Before fish evolved to walk on land, she was already here......
I'll be going to visit her again soon....... I find it amusing how the organization that hired me to dive all those months ago are still trying to search for the place that I had been to..... How do I know this?..... It's hard to say.... she whispers such things to me during those moments in my dreams...... Sadly, they won't find her....... Because that's the thing about the deep.... We know much more of the space above than what lies beneath.... Because the deep is a world that is much more alien to us..... Concept such as times and reality work differently down there....... they can look all they want..... but they won't find her.... I can......
Because after all..... she calls to me.....
