Description
Providence covered the distance to the altar with great strides. With the hellhounds being kept at bay by Octavia, it gave him time to figure out a way to close the ever growing portal. He could hear the hostages screaming through their bindings and restraints, their very life force being harnessed by the machines as fuel for opening the gateway.
Providence’s eyes narrowed and as he neared the altar he splayed his hand forward aiming at the accursed machines.
“Diripio!”
An unseen force slammed into the first machine and there was a loud metallic grinding sound as something inside of it gave way and it shattered. Providence repeated the same spell at the second machine which imploded. The stream of life forces being drained from the hostages abruptly stopped and Providence turned to the man at the altar. Their eyes met, and Providence aimed his hand at the altar, “Diruo”.
The altar cracked and exploded, the man beside it yelling in alarm as he threw himself to the side to avoid the debris that shot out like shrapnel. With a great leap, Providence landed upon the platform where remnants of the altar lay. Providence regarded the man on the ground who started to laugh.
“You’re too late! Too late!” the man coughed out with childish glee as he pointed at the portal. Providence turned to the massive gateway and cursed. While the machines and siphoning of life force have been stopped, the portal itself remains open. It had become self-sustaining.
“You’ve failed! You cannot stop their arrival! Their time is now!” the man continued to jeer at Providence.
Providence didn’t even bother to look at the man and simply pointed a finger at him, “Coerco.” The man let out a cry of surprise as he felt himself be bound by glowing circlets of light.
The portal shone with such otherworldly light, and behind it lay an even more bizarre and terrifying sight. Providence could see colossal forms behind the portal. They were beings that transcended human understanding, their forms inducing both wonder and terror constantly twisting and churning in their equally enigmatic domains. He could see them approaching the portal, eager to break forth into this plane of reality to remake it into their own. An act that Providence would not allow.
His cane dissipated into shadows as he faced the portal and slowly raised his hands to his side before he started to speak.
“As you have tasked me to go forth and answer void’s maddening call, so let thine presence now be made.”
The entire cavern seemingly shuddered as the unseen presence of something unfathomable manifested.
“As my purpose is now made clear, I call upon thine authority. As I have answered thine summons let now my call upon thine name be answered.”
The walls of the gateway started to shift, as though the very stones themselves were transforming into something that was alive.
“As I rise now against the adversary so shall you. As your authority and edict is given form, so shall mine be.”
The beings beyond the gate hastened their speed, as if sensing the gathering power standing against them. Providence watched them with hardened eyes.
“As a watcher of this reality’s gates, I name you trespassers, enemies, and I cast you out! ‘Til all has passed and ashes laugh.”
What transpired next was something that even the bound madman could not comprehend. He watched Providence as power seemingly exploded out from him. He gritted his teeth as the sudden sound of wailing and lamentations reverberated within the confines of the cavern. Cries of agony, of sorrow and dread that chilled him to the core and made his eardrums ring. He watched as the walls of the gate turned black and churn before he saw strange beings emerge from it. He watched as the beings let loose a maddening song and started to seal the gateway with their very own forms. He could even hear the beings beyond the portal utter out otherworldly sounds of anger as their path was being sealed right in front of them.
But despite all those sounds and sights, the man trembled at Providence. For in that moment the truth dawned on him that he was not human. This conclusion revealed itself to him as his vision of Providence seemingly… wavered… for a brief moment. It was then that the man saw the much larger form that encompassed Providence. He saw the… thing… As it moved its hands, controlling the sealing of the gateway, like a conductor would a choir…
The portal was sealed and with it, the horrifying cries that once filled the room died out as well. Where the gateway had once been was a hardened wall with an unusual surface. Providence lowered his arms as he regarded the sealed gateway, before his attention returned to the bound man. Providence turned and walked towards him.
"Stay back! Stay back!” the bound man yelled, trying and failing to move away from Providence as he approached. Providence reached him and the bound man could do nothing but stare up at the man… No… the entity that looked down at him.
“What are you?” he asked in a fear laced voice.
Providence didn’t answer but simply said, “Obliviscatur.”
The bound man’s eyes rolled back as his consciousness faded and he fell into sleep’s domain. Providence glanced behind him to see Octavia approach. The sword was no longer in her hands and she gingerly holstered back her discarded gun.
“That’s it then? It’s over?” Octavia asked Providence.
“If you mean the portal then yes, it has been closed. As for those things beyond it, it is never over.” Providence answered before he caught a glimpse of Octavia’s hand.“Is that a hellhound fang?”
Octavia held up the fang and shrugged. “Souvenir for Cain.”
