Description I suppose this has to be fantasy, since I certainly never exsted in period.

Common knowledge has it that to be properly protected and useful in a fight, a woman has no choice but to wear the same kind of armor as a man -and thus, is indistinguishable from a man in full armor. I've been saying it need not be so for years.
Armour fashon in the high and late middle ages -and the early renaissance- took its cues from popular men's fashon at the time. Whether it was broad shoulders and tight butts, well turned legs or prosperous middle-age spread, it was reflected in the armor of the time. I simply attempted to do the same thing, borrowing from women's fashon instead. Once I had the idea, it really wasn't all that hard.

It's nice to see a realistically designed female suit of armor for a change. ^^

Thank you! And thank you for the

Realistically designed, yet still attractive suits of women's armour are something of a hobby of mine. This is old work, though, and as with all old work I have that love-hate thing going on with it. Might I point you towards a few newer pieces on the same theme? [link] [link]

I'll go ahead and fav those too. ^^

I've been trying to work out something along those lines for a sci-fi setting. (Or more recently, gently prodding other, more qualified people into doing it.)

Anyway, I'd have to say that it's a pretty good hobby to have. XD

Very very nice, man! Despite being doably authentic, it really has a wonderful sense of style. though personally, i think a nice pair of shoulder pads/plates would make it look even better. gracefully downwards curving ones, to fit with the slightly feminine image, but still maintain functionality and the strong overall appearance of the suit.

faved.

Well, there's a problem with that. See, armour design mirrored fashon design. Technology improved as time went on, yes, but the shape and flow of the armor mirrored how clothes looked. The idea of this sketch was to try to figure out what armor for a woman would have looked like by basing it off of women's fashon. Thus, the off-the-shoulder look, the emphasised hips and supported torso, and the ankle-length dress.

The pauldrons would be pointed (or buckled, I suppose) to the... blast... I forgot the name of that full-shoulder gorget-like affair they used so often in the 16th century. Starts with an 'M' I think. They work just like normal pauldrons, but the primary lame is just futher down and points at a different angle. Function is the same. Some critics elsewhere think that it would bind on the breastplate, (I don't) but a hinge and leaf-spring solves that easily.

And the visor is an approximation, sorry. It's meant to be one of those 16th century close-helmets with the one-piece, full-face perforated visor. I left out perforations (all those little circles! ) Common in foot combat, or so I've heard -not really my period.

I like this alot, man! I was thinking about making a real suit out of my new samurtai girl pic. It would be fun, especially getting someone to size it on!
LOL, good job on the sketch, man. I like how the pouldrons come down like the shoulders of period gowns.

thanks, glad you like it. I keep debating about whether or not to throw the dice and stick it up on the Archive or not.

Interesting idea I've had...is this for a story you are writing? I'm assuming the legs are armored underneath the skirt, right?

Not as such, no. I *do* write -and I'm *trying* to sell a few- but nothing like this is in the works.

This is just a "proof of concept", if you will, to wave under the noses of some armourer buddies of mine. Dare them to tell me that it can't be made -because it can, and it's all from parts of kits that they've already studied and replicated.
Yes, the legs would be protected by cuisses and greaves (plate leg defenses, upper and lower), just like on men's armour. On the other hand, it would be *supremely* indecent for a woman of that time to show her legs -thus, the dress. Oh, it could be made of maille I suppose, but think of the weight!

....You're a fan of Symphony X!?!

Ohh yeah, I love Symphony X!

It amazes me that you are actually a metalsmith...there can't be very many real ones left!!

Maybe that's why the whole armor thing jumped out at me so much. My friend would love a new member to her SymX club...
