it's from the greek mythology, pandora was created by the gods and was given a box, which she may never open. however, due to her curiosity, she opened the box...
the content of the box is evil things of human kind [greed, vanity, lies, etc...]
they all came out of the box.
all but hope.
it stayed inside the box...

actually, it's supposed to be pandora's jar, if you see from the greek word... but the most famous interpretation is pandora's box...
