Description I met Dogman at Camp Casey in Washington DC. As soon as I saw him I knew I had to get a good photograph of him. I think in total I took about 60 shots of him throughout the 3 days I was in DC. When I photograph people I really try not being noticed because I want to get people as candid as possible. I wish I could post every photo I took of Dogman but you know… Maybe 1 or 2

When: September 24th 2005
Where: Washington DC
What: The United for Peace and Justice Anti-War protest & march

Everything about this image is important -- the eyes looking downward, the closed fist, the slight trace of a smile (or perhaps it was the twist of a mouth feeling sadness). There is a sense of compassion and determination in his face, and the capture is wonderful. I'd be happy to see all 60, but whatever you choose to share would be great. Welcome back!

Thank you so much... you know what is funny about a photo is that it is all about what is in the frame and the rest of the story is up to you... I would never say what Dogman was doing at that moment, but when people see it they create a story line in their imagination and that is truly beautiful

I am actually only posting 24 B&W photos from my trip but I will be making a gallery of quite a few more after all the posting is done. I took about 1000 photos so it will take me a while to pick the ones I want for the special color gallery

I think it's the commonality of our humanity that people react to. We see ourselves in a photograph. And the visual seems to cut through all the intellectual layers that screen us from the experience. I said to someone today that if the American Revolution were now, Tom Paine would have to be a photographer or a film maker. Words alone, and I say this very reluctantly, just don't seem to have the same power as the visual image. As a committed lover of language, I think this borders on the tragic, but cannot deny what is so obvious. As for your soon-to-be-realized gallery, just let me know when you're ready for visitors. I'm glad the trip was such a source of good work, and I'm sure your family is really happy to have you home.

I believe you are right when you talk about the commonality of our humanity, I think this is why people have such profound reactions to some of the photos they see. I think it is proven by the fact that everyone reacts differently to different photographs. I also hope that from the 1000 photos I just shot I chose the best 24. They are the best to me but maybe I skipped something that would have been more universally loved or even one that so moved someone, it actually changed their outlook on life or now see life in a whole new way. This has happened to me from listening to music, watching a film or experiencing an amazing photograph. I believe photography helped change the collective consciousness of the American people during the Vietnam War so I know it can happen for this one too. Sometimes it takes the simplest things.

I will let you know as soon as I make the color gallery of the trip. I am not sure yet how I will present it. I may just make a simple galley or I may lay it out in a blog style, telling the story in chronological time with a paragraph or short sentence per photo. I guess I’ll have to think about that one a bit

I think you know that I am a firefighter and as a fighter I work a 24 hour shift. When I get home my kids always run to the door screaming “hi daddy” and telling me how they love me and how much they have missed me. When I got home from Washington DC my 4 year old son kept asking “How was work?” “How many fires did you have?” “Did the babies have boo boos?”. I can not even express how good it feels when they are so excited to see me and make such a show of it. My wife is just the fricken bomb! She makes it all possible for me to do these little trips I am always pulling outta nowhere.

About the joys of family, what was great to read in your message is how much you appreciate what you have with your kids and that "fricken bomb" of a wife. I know (and they tell me when I look super-desperately needy for recognition) that I did a good job raising my kids, but they are grown and there can be no more of those incredible moments like the one you related about your 4 year old rushing to the door. Those are the everyday stuff of life and I think it's great that you are understand how wonderful it is. As for your wife, I agree that she is a fricken bomb.
