=> Jan Huyghen van Linschoten

Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563, Haarlem – 8 February 1611, Enkhuizen) was a Dutch Protestant merchant, traveller and historian. An alternate spelling of second name is Huijgen.

He is credited with publishing important information about Asian trade, such as the navigational routes that enabled the passage to the elusive East Indies to be opened to the English and the Dutch. This enabled the British East India Company and the Dutch East India Company to break the 16th century monopoly enjoyed by the Portuguese on trade with the East Indies. Source :[link]

=> Portugal Hiring Netherlands Crews

Portugal also had problems on the home-front. First, whatever the opportunities offered by going to sea – and they were considerable in a poor country – the small local population could never supply the crews required by the Portuguese merchantmen. This problem was solved by recruiting both officers and men from any likely corner of Europe, including, notably, the Netherlands, where the population had long been engaged in sea-faring. => Leaking Information

In the stand-off between Utrecht and Arras – or between the United Provinces and what soon came to be known as the Spanish Netherlands – there was little question of Amsterdam, or any other Dutch city, simply taking over the trade with Lisbon: nor was there, by the end of the 1580s any inclination to do so. The numerous Dutch who had seen service in the Portuguese merchantmen sailing to the East – some of whom, such as Jan van Linschoten had reached high positions in Goa – could recognize an opportunity when they saw one, and were not slow to publicize it either. Prospects were further enhanced by a rise in the price of pepper following the depredations of the English privateers.

So sad...As nations, friends become enemies and enemies become friends...

I think it would be more logical if Netherlands said 'Dank je'. U is a very formal way of saying you and is very respectful.

Whoa...Talking about double-crossing and betrayal between Neth and Portugal, this is rather unexpected for me.

Gresham College posts their lectures online, too? That's too awesome. :') I wish that I knew about all these free education things when I was in middle school or high school.

The college was found in 1597?! Whoa!

Yes, :') They post some of their lectures online. It's a blessing for us who lives far away from library and on an island in the middle of nowhere XDD Aaah, I love you Gresham College!
The college is pretty old ^^ but their lectures are amazing.

There are rumors the leaking was actually planned
Port was well known for his secrecy and was particularly careful with his documents and instruments (the ones he let in plain sight were forgeries with fake data). It was only after the union with Spain that information started to spread, not before

There are even rumors the discovery of the Americas made by Columbus wasn't so accidental as most think
Some say he was actually a spy employed by Port to distract Spain from the spice trade. Others say the information he learned while working in the portuguese vessels (the carved branches in Azores said to have come from the west) was actually planted to inspire his travels to the west
Either way there are 3 things that are certain:
1) the dates of the discoveries Port presented were false. He announced them years later than they actually occurred, to give him more time to fully establish his presence on those lands, without competition from the other european nations
2) he's been to more places than he cared to share (not sure why, though part of the reason may be the destruction of many documents in the "Torre do Tombo", where they were kept, during the fire after the 1755 earthquake). One of them was Australia
3) he asked to move the line further west in the Treaty of Tordesilhas. There are no good reasons to do so unless he already knew beforehand the existence of land there
