Description This is a very strange work of mine, in that i didnt even intend to actually...........make it in the first place!

I was basically trying out some new planet techniques, and then i decided to make a background. The background in mind was a galaxy seen from the inside, like you would see at night outside of the city. However, the more i worked on it, the more i got carried out, until i dropped the planet altogether and left just the galaxy. The planet was nice but it was distracting, although technically in a realistic setting.

I looked at a few pictures of the Milky Way (the galaxy, not the candybar), just to see how it would generally feel. I did not try to duplicate it, since this isnt obviously the Milky Way.

During the final stages, it was really hard to work with it, since it was a 2.5GB PSD file when open, so the machine slowed down quite a bit, even though i have 1GB of RAM.

Overall, this is a very simple work, but with hidden complexity, which is the kind that i like!

As always, i would love to hear your thoughts on it

EDIT: If you want the wallpaper version, you can find it HERE

It's like water on my windmill. I just can stare at it for hours, obviously I've put it on my screen, and arranged icons in the way which makes me feel dizzy.
I don't know what wise thing to write you I just love that drawing. It's just view and place I would like to fly in with my starfighter. Thank you so much

Beautiful work! Just tell me, how large was the image size? When I do projects like this I usually have the image size at 3000x3000 or 2000x2000 and it rarely gets above 500MB.

the image was around 3000 pixels wide, and veeeery big. When it comes to size (in MB), it just depends not only on size, but on how many layers you have (And i use a hell of a lot of layers!). Many of my works are over 1gb when fully opened, but about 200mb when closed.

Are there any tutorials, tools, or things that you used that you can link me too or tell me of?
I've always wanted to make things as realistic as this, and you've been my idol.

Heh, glad you like it

I wrote a tutorial on how to make a planet, but a good site with resources for space art is Solar Voyager . But again, 99% of what I do, I learned without tutorials. Just practice and a hell of a lot of experimenting.

Hi.

I would like to give you my 2 cents about this piece:

First of all, on the bigger picture, I say that you've done a pretty good job with this.

When we're heading for details, I'd like to point out that on first look the twinkling stars look like squares. However, when you take a closer look (with a Zoom plugin on FireFox ) I see that the stars are round, and what gives the squareness is indeed their brightness. The brightness is NOT square, but it resembles square and may be decieving. To me it shows that work was put in it, but to those who don't want to give a closer look, it might seem unreal...
Second point - I think that the colours you used for the nebula (excuse me for my incorrect titles, after all my english isn't perfect and is my second language) are pretty real and, from what I remember, look like a nebula in space. I'll take that point and expand it - Your whole nebula is real, with shapes and everything. Also, the background is most impressive (all of the stars), and on a side note I'll say that I have found a few stars that shape a cross
Oh, and I think that there is something missing... Not something crucial, but some colours maybe to give the eye a little fun, if you know what I mean...

But like I said, on the big picture I think that this is well done and impressive. Definatly a favorite!

Cheers

I'm surprised that this isn't a photo since it looks so realistic. I like how it's calm and serene. I think people tend to worry too much about action and detail and then try to force some sort of apocalyptic explosion in every piece. It's nice to skip all that and go for a nice, peaceful view. Great work as always.

ah, i feel your pain with file sizes, most of mine are obscene, and yeah, opening and saving, even performing meagre tasks such as painting in tiny details is a pain in the ass at times.

In any case, that's one hella sexy starfield, and i love the textured look to the backing, really nicely done indeed

dinyctis In reply to alyn [2004-09-19 14:20:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

yea, saving, opening, and rotating things took the most time. A lot of space is due to a lot of layers that are turned off, but kept in place just to test different layer combinations. After i was done, i deleted all of the layers that were off, and the file's size dropped by like 40 percent.

Great work, that is a decent file size . Great effort you put in, it is very nicely details and looks as you would expect this scene to look like ( as of NASA photography), and the colours are brillant they look natural and i don't think anything would have suited, a fav for sure and for your "hidden complexity"!

chaos-syndrome [2004-09-17 11:11:01 +0000 UTC]

This image could almost convince me that this was a genuine astronomical image. The detail of the galaxy's nebulosity is very good, and the colouring and brightness flares are very well done. If there is a criticism I could make, I would say that the spacing between the medium-brightness stars around the image looks rather uniform, perhaps reducing the number of them might help. Still, it's a great piece.

dinyctis In reply to chaos-syndrome [2004-09-21 23:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmmm, thats a possibility. Although i'm pretty satisfied with the distribution of them, i appreciate you sharing your opinion.

I think that since the galaxy goes around the viewer, some stars could be evenly distributed across the sky, as opposed to a situation in which we would be looking at a galaxy from the outside.

Still, it's an interesting point that got me thinking, thank you

that's gorgeous, diny. i just got back from the cottage, where i had a great view of the night sky, especially since there was no moon that night. the milky way looked much like this, but not nearly as colorful. anyway, your space pics always get the imagination going, wondering what weird aliens are out there, looking back at us. nice work.

madbrainsurgeon [2004-09-14 08:20:39 +0000 UTC]

Ok I got to right a more succint comment this is possibly the most realistic space neb I have seen so far I have been looking at hubble pics and any real space pics I could get my hands on (at the moment a rather nice shell cluster with a jpg file size of 10mb*I have dialup*hhehehe I looked at the psd file size and nearly fell over).

I think you have captured the spirit of the milky way and marvelously diluted and added to it along with making a new one (hmm it makes sense to me anyway).

Now if only we could get a mammoth sized projector and a large several acred black sheet and possibly plenty of helicoptors and we could put it in the sky.

I normally don't ask, but what was the original pixel size of the original? 2.5g is enormous. As for the piece, the larger stars look a wee bit too big making them look a bit out of place, but I tend to do the same so don't think that I'm negatively criticizing it. Everything else looks just wonderful, man.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to acidround [2004-09-13 21:56:54 +0000 UTC]

3000x4500

the size is mostly due to the massive number of layers

lol, IMHO, the colours are bit saturated for space, but perhaps thru the say... HST lens, short/long exposures, filters, it might been different, or plain artistry kicking in i'm guessing it's either one.

in any case, diny... those are real fine details, you did your homework well.

Well done, It's been a while since you've graced us with a piece of work that inspired so much awe... and a sensation of insignificance. That was always one of the greater magic's of your work, you manage to capture the vastness of space almost. It's beautiful, so many stars, and you can't help but think about ever planet for ever star... it's powerful. The fact that you left the planet out of the picture is key in that effect. With nothing familiar but stars, the viewer creates planets and worlds which are so much more comforting then the blackness of space dotted with distant places. A wonderful work. :applaud:

diny, with a 2.5gb psd, i often wonder how much of you compositon is actualy not visible due to resizing down for online display. i'm sure there are details that you include that end up smaller than one pixle. once again, this is magnificent work, and i even like it better than your last galaxy deviation, enchantment.

on a side note, how big of an undo history do you keep in photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to Lightsabr2 [2004-09-27 03:00:04 +0000 UTC]

i usually keep about 10 steps of undo history in photoshop. sometimes less.

And yes, a lot of stars are missed due to resizing, but at the full view, one gets a nice balance of overall view and detail
