Description This is probably one of my most minimalistic space scenes. Note that it doesnt even have a sun, and the stars are really simple.

Why did i bother submitting this, considering that my average deviation is 10 times more complex than this?

there are 2 main reasons:

1) As you all probably know, today (August 27th, 2003) Mars is "only" about 36 million miles from Earth. This might sound still really far, but its 5 times closer than a few months ago. This is due to the fact that Earth and Mars synchronized their orbits, which happens once every 60.000 years.
Why is this important and what does this symbolize? well think of it this way: No matter the race, country, religion, political party, hair color, eye color, age, social status, or gender, when looking up there i knew that millions of others were looking at the same thing, simply as earthlings. Its a way of uniting everything, even if just for one moment. This also symbolizes that space and technology, sooner or later, will bring us all united and we will just be "one."

2) This is a homage to my computer. As i write here, the mail truck is coming here to deliver the final parts to build the new computer. This computer is about 2 years old, and i started doing computer graphics with it. But now its time to upgrade, and it will now serve my parents for Internet surfing disaster.

I also submitted it because when looking up at mars, it was very simple, there werent any weird lights, or nebula, or moon, nothing. Just a dark sky with a red star. So i think this minimalistic piece kind of reflects that. Also i included the Earth and the Moon in there, to give a sense of scale, and to make you feel small, yet not insignificant (although thats up to you)

Believe it or not, this piece took me 1 day to make. If i had to duplicate it, it would barely take me 2 hours. But it took me a day because i was playing and trying different compositions, until i settled for the classy symetric one. Yea call it a waste of time, but i originally planned to make no more space art with this computer, until i changed my mind yesterday

I hope you enjoy it, at least a bit

Hey, I thought this piece looked a little familiar, and I was right. I saw your wallpaper version of this one before. This piece is absolutely brilliant, however I notice a flaw.

It may just be me, but your images (This one, the wallpaper version, and your "From Earth" all have the same issue) seem to be in low quality. What I mean is you saved this images with a low quality. How can I tell?

Well one look at the the lettering it's not perfectly clear and you can see blocks around the lettering. For a good example of my point; do a print screen of your desktop and paste the image in MS paint. Then save the image as a bitmap, then save it as a jpeg. You should notice that the jpeg file looks different, which is because it has a lower quality.

Now I know in photoshop when saving a jpeg file you have the option to select what level of quality you want (1 to 12), I think some how you've saved this image (and others) with a lower quality.

I mean call me crazy if you want, but this lower quality takes away from the sheer beauty that is your work.

Either way, I'm adding this piece to my

I'm well aware of the lower quality! You'll find in some other pieces, too. The thing is, this was released in 2003. Broadband wasn't as widespread then as it is now, so I didnt want to killl bandwidth and have people wait a few minutes for this image to load. At the same time, I didnt want to release a smaller version because it wouldve taken away from the scale

da-fees In reply to dinyctis [2008-05-26 15:12:08 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough, I completely understand then why did it the way you did it. However would it ever be possible for you to go back and resave your pieces with a higher quality or have you since gotten rid of the original source files?

I only ask because with high-speed internet now more widespread perhaps you could do a re-release?,

Oh while I am thinking about it, do your print versions of these pieces use the lower quality or did you use a higher quality version for your prints?

dinyctis In reply to da-fees [2008-05-26 16:26:05 +0000 UTC]

The print files are saved with maximum quality and full resolution. Bandwidth is not an issue in that department

I may still have the original files (I do keep quite a few, but not all of my older ones.

Well it is fine whether you do or don't, I was mainly concerned about your print version, because I have an empty wall here in my room and a piece like this one may be something to really fill it up!,

I'm just trying to decide if I want to go with one of your prints or something by Hameed, because you both are truly excellent artists!,

I can try to verify with the prints service. I submitted it a while back and I'm not entirely sure of the state in which it is.

I'll get back to you when I find out what the deal is. Funny that you're also picking Hameed, since he's one of my favorite as well. Which particular one interests you?

Well, out of his prints, I like his "The Planets" piece. However, I was showing some of my friends his prints, and they seem to all like his "Emperia" piece. What drew them into that piece was his nice use of different colors. Which, I will agree with that, but I like it for other reasons too..

Mainly, I love this piece for it's simplicity. I like Hameed's, "The Planets" because it is beautiful and provides you with a little knowledge, and I don't know may be it is the wide range of colors, but something about 'Emperia" stands out to me.

I guess I have some thinking to do.,

dinyctis In reply to da-fees [2008-05-27 02:48:45 +0000 UTC]

"The Planets" is old-school because it has Pluto in it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

da-fees In reply to dinyctis [2008-05-27 03:56:08 +0000 UTC]

That is very true, but it still doesn't take away any of the beauty behind it.

Now that you mention that fact though, perhaps I should hold off on that piece in the event he may ever release an updated version of that print, which accounts for the fact of Pluto no longer being a planet.,

Oh, and let me add that I hope I am not seeming as if I am bashing you. Quite the opposite, I am merely pointing out something I noticed. Beyond that this piece is very amazing. It truly proves the concept of less is more.

I hope you understood what I was trying to explain in my previous post and that there is no hard feelings.

Please keep up the great work.

minimalistic, indeed, cristian. it's wonderful, due to the reality that there isn't always a spaceship flying by in space, but i think this could've used a better focal. nonetheless, awesome job.

Very nice. Lots of Symbolism. I really like the uncluttered simplicity. It works for this piece very well. Very back to basics, bare bones, this is reality in our own cosmic backyard kind of feel. teeny earth and big mars nicely show how we're not too significant in the grand scheme of things. I really like the texture you got on the red planet. some nice craters and ravines.
I forget, are you 100% photoshop or do you use Max or Maya alone or with a paint program as well?
Definate example of how less is more.

sometimes less is more, i realy think this is fantastic.

the attention to detail is the only reason this went from a possible flop to a DOWN RIGHT FAV!

if it didn't convince me that i was infact looking at the cresent of mars this would not have made such a big impact for me.

your starting to reach a point where i'd concider sending your stuff to nasa they may want to hire you for concept images, they do alot of that i find.

very professional!!!

Very cool. The simplicity really does work here, and I like how you've given the exact opisite view that we have here....Mars on top and earth far far in the distance, below. The simplicity really works here, Although, I think less is more might have worked with the stars, too. Although, I live in a big city and can't see the moon most days.
