I tried the trial version of Photomatix last night and I didn't like it. It wouldn't align pictures for me correctly and so everything came out like fuzzy, discolored crap.
My biggest limitations are my Kodak 7.1 mp Easyshare camera and Paint Shop Pro Photo that only does HDR merging in 16 bit rather than 32 bits like Photomatix.
I got to take a few shots with my buddy's 10 mega pixel Canon and that thing is awesome!
I want one.

hm... search for a program clled qtpfsgui (that's the real name), same like Photomatix but it's freeware, and maybe the best freeware
but what's with the aligning? that's strange, because my images are everytime aligned rightly...

I don't have a tripod and my hands are shaky as all hell.
I tried it with a couple of sets of pictures from different exposures and every time it came up all messed up.
Paint Shop usually line's my stuff up pretty good, as long as I get steady shots.
I'll give this qtpr2d2guy thing a try.
