Description Guh, why you have to use guns, Tita? Why? They were the thing I was least looking forward to colouring in this one Dx Anywho, this is the finished version of the WIP I posted a few days ago:

I mainly adjusted the hands and a few other things on her clothes before colouring.

Thank you sooo much! <3 I worked so so hard on this one, it's nice to know it pays off - but I still need a lot of practise colouring metal! Any tips?

You're welcome and it definitely pays off. Looks great. I wish I had tips. I'm still a bit funny with colouring metal. I just tend to use a lot of refs and try to draw reflections on the edges to make it more shiny.

Well, that sounds like a good tip in itself! I tried to put some more shine on the metal bits, but then when I took into account where the light was coming from I didn't know whether too many highlights were necessary, but I guess they are if you actually want it to look like metal xD I should look at some refs next time

true but then there is polished metal which seems to be ultra shiney and you have to think of metal blemishes just like a face. I hate drawing metal things lol One of those things I tend to avoid... I like how you colour metal because it actually looks like metal. I don't think my metal looks very metal like.

Yeah, gawd I hate shines, I just can't make them look right Dx I'd avoid it too if I could, but I end up creating stories that need to have stuff like that in it xD I really don't help myself sometimes >w<

haha yeah I get you, that was one of the reasons I took up 3D so I could create shiny objects to study and draw but even in 3D you need something for it to reflect. I learned a great deal about polished and unpolished and how the surrounding area effects the look of metal, it's colours and how it gets the metal look in general. It's a lot like those silly mirrors and reflects things in weird warped ways. If I take it up again I've been thinking of sharing those things as stock for people to use but I just am not sure on how useful others would find it. Main reason I did it in 3D was because I had a lack of shiny things and no camera lol. It was fun and helpful though.

Ah, cool. I bought a magazine about 3D art and had a look at some of the programs that it's made on - one of which was £3000! I couldn't believe it! What program do you use? Now, that sounds pretty helpful - about how the surroundings effect the look of the metal - I could do with knowing about that! And, I'm sure someone would find it helpful! You never know unless you post it

I use Blender because it's free but it's quality is on par with the top programs. And Ikr crazy expensive. Autodesk Maya and 3Ds max are about 6k in my money @_@ I WISH I could afford 3Ds Max. I learned max but went to Blender because I realized I'd never afford max lol. That is true... I may do it one day. Maybe even make a little journal about what I learned. I learned quite a lot about metal that way. But I still can't draw it well lol.

Maya's one of the programs I looked at, they had tips on how to do stuff with it in the mag I bought, but I never would have thought it'd be so expensive Dx I think I'll have a look at Blender though - but I'm not sure how good I'll be with 3D since I've never tried anything like it before.

And, I know I'm always grateful for journals like that, especially for programs I use myself, but sometimes even when it's not a program I have you can often transfer techniques too

Ah maya. If I didn't find it so awkward I would use it. It makes beautiful animations and is used a lot in film and now it's getting popular with games. Final Fantasy uses Maya. It is expensive but the coding to make it and be virtually a flawless program I understand why lol. It would be neat if you checked it out. I didn't think I could do 3D at all, it was awkward. I use zbrush a lot more than Blender. I got it as a gift from my grandfather. I ended up finding that I like virtual scultping. To make many of them and paint them by hand.  Idk but drawing and scultping seemed to go hand in hand and I've been enjoying 3D as much as hating it lol for being hard at first.

Ah true, that's a good point. Something to think about.

I didn't know Maya was so widely used for films and games. I think it's a lot of money to spend if it's going to be a program you don't find easy to use xD But then again I suppose there's trials usually - but I never end up making the most of them. Plus with starting uni again soon I think I'll stick to what I'm used to drawing coz I won't have much time once my course starts. Virtual sculpting - just the sound of it makes me dizzy! I can understand why you'd have a love/hate relationship with 3D! Lol.

Ah yeah but paid 3D pays well and honestly it should pay well. When you see how many squares that are placed around the human body one by one by hand you gain a whole new respect for 3D artists and games. Even the worst games don't seem so bad because the creator had to have tried very very hard. I keep quitting when it gets hard but it's interesting so now I just take a break and go back. I wish I had something like Maya or Modo some days though. Just need something a little better to animate my models with. Ah trials, I hate trials for 3D. For me it takes about 3 months to learn the program. Unless you have a bit of 3D experience prior to this, trials for 3D don't go far lol And I can understand why you wouldn't want to try it out. If you do though, it's a surprising amount of work. Also lol love hate describes it perfectly.

Yeah, I tend to respect artists anyway when I see incredibly detailed pictures - and especially things like this: themattedepartment.com/ that look like photographs but have been made on a 3D program!
I think that's the best thing to do with any kind of digital art - I have to make myself take a break or else I know as I get further into a picture I start losing motivation and start rushing to get it finished xD
Oh, I know, trials for any program I've tried have never lasted long enough! I remember when I first started digital art, around two years ago now I think, and I didn't know you could get Sai from some sites for free so I had to keep downloading the trial onto different computers >w< I only use photoshop now though, the Sai version I downloaded isn't opening files for some reason.

DraconianRain In reply to DolceCapella [2013-08-22 09:12:35 +0000 UTC]

Me too. That's an insane amount of detail. It's mind blowing how some of them can hand paint that texture lol or how they sculpt things like that. It's just amazing!

Trials are evil lol. I wish a trial would last for 3months or give you a learning edition like toonboom. Toonboom gives you an unlimited trial, it just watermarks all your exports but you can fully test the program in the time it takes you to learn it. I wish more companies did that. But Autodesk has their learning/education edition free for students now so that's good. I remember the first time I tried 3Ds Max. The trial, it was almost useless for me lol. Had NO idea what I was doing XD Wasn't so bad when I learned it some more though but that's kind of why I end up turning to freeware like Blender. You can learn at your own pace and make things without watermarks.

Amg IKR!? It's the sort of thing I find really inspiring but at the same time can make me feel a little like 'I could never do that in a million years!' But all the same I love to look at the work people can create by hand. Though before I started using Sai and Photoshop I used to look at pictures created on those programs and thought it impossible for someone to actually draw that, I suppose when you get more insight into the workings of digital art then it becomes more plausible that a single person can create amazing artwork like that

Three months would be a lot nicer for trials! But since I got Photoshop I haven't been too bothered about trying other programs out, maybe subconsciously I think about how long it took me to learn Photoshop (though I still don't know what everything does!) and just want to create pictures rather than spend all that time learning a new program? I don't know, but that unlimited trial program sounds really reasonable. I suppose most companies just want people to buy their products rather than just use the trial forever xD

SAME! That's kind of why I stay away from places like Shadowness and CGHub lol Makes me feel really bad. But then there are times where it makes me inspired. I can't explain it really. I use to think that, I also use to be fooled on how it could possibly be done by computer.

It would! Give you enough time to figure it out and work out if you like it or need it. I use to think that but honestly, photoshop and mangastudio are the hardest drawing apps. Everything else follows a lighter idea and everything else seems far easier to use. I was surprised but it lead me to many wonderful programs and drawings. But to I'm a program addict. I like to try things out. A lot of companies do want pay. After trying out coding myself I have a new respect for digital art programs. It is by no means, easy and I understand the pricing better.

Yeah, another one of those kind of love/hate relationships I guess, love it for the kind of thing that can be created on it, but hate it when you can't figure out how to do it xD Yeah, but then even when I did think how could someone draw something like that on a computer I never thought 'well how else could it be done'? Makes me feel a little embarrassed about how naive I was xD

I know a lot of people prefer Sai to Photoshop, but in all honesty I'm the opposite (and not just because it's basically the only program I have working right now xD) I never liked on Sai how you were the arrow next to the brush rather than the brush itself (or eraser or whatever tool you happened to be using). That's the main reason I like Photoshop, since I don't tend to use much other than the brush and eraser xD Lol, I'm different, once I find a program I like I tend to stick with it, I'm like that with everything though, once I find my favourite way of doing something I don't vary >w<

and kick ass xD

Suggestion for shading medal is it's (usually) very shiny, so lots of highlights and reflective lights c:
