Jonny 2x4 was always a little strange growing up. He never really fit in with either crowd, the regular kids in the cul-de-sac, or the Eds. Never the other kids, because he was just a liiiiiiiitle too out there, and never with the Eds, simply because they already had a strange kid (namely Ed) in the group (plus Jonny didn't have the name "Ed" anywhere in his name....).

Sure, he was liked, but he knew he was different. Good thing he had his best pal Plank! He'd get teased every once in a while for being best friends with a hunk of wood, but that was okay. All the way through high school, he'd have to put Plank under the chair in class and make sure no one carved their initials into them; he always had to make sure that his best pal was safe.

After high school and after graduation, Jonny decided to attend the local community college. He wanted to do something with plants.....or maybe animals.....or maybe tofu......he couldn't decide. But what he could decide on was moving out of his parents house and getting a place of his own. He wound up moving in with Ed at his apartment (which Double D checked up on religiously.....it dumbfounded him how Ed was managing to run his own apartment, and was waiting on very tip-toe when it should fall through).

At first things were great. Jonny and Ed got along well since they were both a little....off, but after only a month living with Ed, Jonny and Plank's relationship began to sour. Jonny wasn't mad at Plank, Plank just stopped talking to Jonny.

Ed never noticed this, though, and Jonny became more and more upset.

One day, it came to a head:

Jonny was sitting at the kitchen/t.v. table, staring across it at Plank, who still had that happy smile on his face. "Ed," Jonny asked to Ed, who was hunched over the stove, "has Plank said anything to you? He's been ignoring me for weeks!"

".......No, Jonny. Plank doesn't say anything.....wait, he chirps!" "Ed, those are the funny crickets outside the window..." "Oh...Have some butter and gravy soup!" Ed offered, showing Jonny the pot that was on the stove. Enraged, Jonny picked up Plank and shook him.

"WHY WON'T YOU TALK TO ME ANYMORE, BUDDY?! WHAT HAPPENED TO US?!"

Plank just stared.

Screaming, Jonny threw Plank out the open window and ran to his room, slamming the door behind. Ed was left standing there, pot of butter and gravy soup in hand.

".....So you want soup, Jonny?"

More weeks passed, and Jonny had little hint left of his previous cheerful personality. Ed tried to cheer him up, but he didn't understand (what did he understand?). Finally, Jonny's answer would come from the hands of a fellow student.

The student noticed that Jonny was down and out, and sat next to him in the college quad.

"Hey, man. What's up?"

"MY BEST FRIEND HATES ME."

"Wow........uh....that sucks."

"Yea...." Jonny pounded his fists on his knees while exclaiming, "I'd do anything to be happy again!" followed by a deep, sad sigh.

The student saw this as his chance. After looking around to be sure that the coast was clear, he pulled out a small bag from his pocket.

"Here, man. This'll make you happy. But it'll cost ya."

"Anything!" Jonny cried, not caring.

Jonny bought the substance in the bag and went straight to the apartment, doing exactly what the student told him to do down to a tee. Jonny never thought anything was wrong. It was a plant in the bag, after all. Plants are great to Jonny!

After about 15 minutes, Jonny heard a faint whisper in his ear, almost like a buzz. His attention perked and he glanced quickly around the room.

"...Hello...?"

He heard it again. This time coming from by the window. Jonny walked carefully towards the window and glanced down. Plank was still laying on the ground, two stories down, staring back with that blank smile.

"Plank......buddy?"

"Yea, it's me! Get me off the ground, will ya??"

"PLANK!!!!" Jonny rushed down the stairs, grabbed Plank, and embraced him tightly. Jonny had his best friend back! And with the wonderful stuff in the bag, Jonny would never be alone again.

The truth is, Jonny's parents were raging, stereotypical hippies, heavily indulging in marijuana. When Jonny moved out, he no longer received contact highs, and thus Plank no longer spoke to him. It was only after buying the bag of marijuana and properly using it (a.k.a smoking it), he found his true friend again...

I in NO way advocate the use of marijuana. In fact I think if you smoke it everyday, you become a HORRID moron. But this whole idea just fit Jonny to me.
