Amazing as usual...I am also surprised at your layer numbers. I apply maybe 5 layers but after that the feathers split...a continual problem for me. I met a feather painter once and asked her how her feathers never split...she said she treated them prior to painting but simply refused to tell me what she sprayed them with. Any clues?

For me I usually just cleanse them really well and use some clear matte base spray and then hand varnish it with another working oil or acrylic fixative layer (that's all it's called, I believe). I use oil paints as well as acrylic, but VERY thinned amounts, so maybe that's the difference?

And that's lame for another artist not to answer your question. :-/ All too many people do that and it's just infuriating sometimes. :-/

I think that's my favorite feather-painting ever. Good composition, actually takes advantage of the feather's natural form rather than trying to work against it and turn it into a rectangular painting- things like the chevron border at one end which strategically avoids the fluff, and the feather's natural coloration dark brown and white on the other end being incorporated as part of the background, and the excellent details painted along the bare shaft. Good thinking with all that. The skill in which the painting itself is also admirable, given the medium- you make it look so easy!

If you only knew how much joy it brings me that someone noticed how I tried to work in the natural dark brown dappling of the feather into the forest and composition. I very sincerely appreciate the compliments: it definitely makes me feel all the time I spent on it wasn't put to waste. There are something like 25 layers of paint on that bugger, and towards the end I was about ready to give up hope.

*smiles* Thanks again!

Thanks so much! I'm always experimenting with paints, believe you me. O_o Feathers just don't take paint well it seems, and some are way too sorft or hard to accept it at all (which is even more frustrating!). I just need additional patience.

Beautiful, it seems that not only is the subject of the art limitless, but the canvas itself also has many possibilites, original, good stuff.
