I realize I've been somewhat lax at posting updates on DA, but I've been slowly making progress with this new gryphon piece, so I thought I'd post the WIP up here on DA.
I'm still not happy with the wings or composition, but it's getting closer with each iteration. I'm trying to do some forced perspective on the nearest wing as well. Additionally I enlarged the tail area since the previous version didn't make it look as if it would contribute much to lift. He will be a full color rendering of a particular gryphon side-character from my story-stuff, and I've attached one of the journal pages where I sketched him last year. You can see him here:

He's still a ways to go, but I want to keep prodding the composition before I go head-first into detail. Still: progress is progress, and if I'm not doing writing, I best keep busy with some art!

I think the biggest thing I have with the composition is the lack of red/orange reflected light in the fields or on the bricks. It's there softly, but the bird is too bold. I would either put more greens into the bird, or maybe make the background more fall based with the sunset reflecting more light off surfaces.

I like how the bird / griffon is "sunning" itself in the rising sun. I lighting seems right.
