They were mandatory. When it comes to Karl, it's a force of habit - he doesn't even realise he's putting the gloves on most of the time. They're like a second skin for him and he wears them most of the time. He feels somewhat naked without them. He'll even sleep with them on, sometimes, since he barely even knows he's wearing them.
