Description
It was a hot summer's day.
Despite the heat, Rockhoof continued his work, plowing through the garden's soil with little to no effort, his brow hardly moistened, not by the minimal exertion he was putting into tilling the ground, but from the sun's rays. He had hardly been at work for less than 20 minutes before a loud voiceΒ interrupted him.
"Halt! Father, what are you doing?" Odin yelled. His messy halo of blonde curls bounced gingerly as he he stomped his way torwards his father, his faced scrunched up with intense curiosity. He was puffed with pride from head to hoof- Rockhoof had never seen anything so adorable in all his years.
"Hail, Prince Odin!" Rockhoof boomed, smiling as his son came over to inspect his work with fierce scrutiny. "I was just preparing this soil for planting- if, of course, that suits you, my little lord."
Odin tensed at the term and gave his father a scowl, his eyes burning brightly. "I'm not little, Father. Now, step aside, I'll handle this," he huffed, springing into the considerably deep pit of freshly mowed dirt. His curls swept over his eyes, causing him to shake his unruly mane aggressively before starting to dig. Rockhoof couldn't help but grin as his son plowed little by little ahead, grunting quietly as he went along. He had only managed to go a few inches before he shook from exhaustion, his breath coming in quick puffs. Rockhoof chuckled heartily, causing Odin to snap his head back to glare at his father.
"Oh, Odin," Rockhoof rumbled fondly, pulling him into a strong embrace as he ruffled his son's mane affectionately. Odin squawked, trying to wriggle his way out of his father's grasp. "One day, lad, you'll be as strong as me!" Rockhoof beamed.Β
Odin snorted.
"You're wrong, Father- I'll be stronger!" he barked, his voice full of determintation. With that, he released himself from Rockhoof's grip and continued his work with newfound vigor.
Rockhoof roared with pride.
"Ha! That's my boy!"

This one's been a long time coming, folks! Also, we're hopping back on the Limboverse train! Explanation below.
The relationship between Odin and Rockhoof is a complicated one. Given his rather unfortunate lack of intimidating size like his father, Odin, even since childhood, was particularly sensitive to his small frame. Still, while he was still young, his relationship with Rockhoof was one of fierce admiration and competitiveness. Odin loved and respected his father greatly and wanted nothing more than to be just like him, if not better, specifically in build and strength. Later on, as he grew older and still lacked a formidable physique, he blamed his father and turned away from him, regarding him with anger and contempt. It breaks Rockhoof's heart (along with Luna's), but instead of trying to reach out to him, Rockhoof remains distant, afraid he'd only push his son away further with his efforts. Odin knows, deep down somewhere, that his lack of an imposing form isn't inherently Rockhoof's fault, but he's much too clouded by his feelings of anger and bitter disappointment to hone in on that rationality.
This was actually a long-time finished collab piece between myself and Kat (formerly known as Hystericat while her account was still active on dA) that has been sitting in my files for ages. I provided the sketch while Kat colored, and she did a marvelous job of it! We both really enjoy working with Odin, and I myself find particular interest in the dynamic between him and Rockhoof. Hopefully you all do, too.
I'm hoping to get Limboverse back on track this summer! I'll be posting a story list synopsis for Limbo very soon, so keep a lookout! Kat and I have worked very hard and have had many discussions about Limboverse, and we're both glad and excited to be sharing this story with you all. Cheers, gang!
