Description

An old piece from several months ago, I finally decided to actually finish it. You can tell I didn't go in with a background in mind.

Time for piece 2 of whatever in which Link is me. Hopefully I can upload things a bit more regularly, but as shit continues to hit the fan, we'll just have to see. Q_Q

Thanks! Horses actually have very similar eyes to goats, I think a lot of larger prey animals do, but a lot of the pictures I saw also had them with more rounded/humanlike pupils?? I have no idea what they're supposed to be. Β

This is a very beautiful and detailed drawing right here
I love the colors in it and to me it seems that Link needs a bit reassurance from his trusty steed to move on ^^ It's totally clear that he trusts her through his pose (not an easy one there as well ). The background looks stunning! Especially the trees and wall O.o I never get this much detail into backgrounds, because I usually get lazy by the time I have to do them XD.
How did you do the structure in the trees ans all? Is it done with normal pencil and later worked over digitally?Β

Thank you, I'm glad you saw that. It was what I was going for. x3 I think, for that pose, I had to roll around on the floor and find things that would elevate my torso the right way. (Also honestly I hadn't had much of a background in mind when I sketched it out, then I was like, well I'm gonna color it, feels weird to make them all detailed and slapped over a white slab of "paper"... and like a week later I had come to regret every decision. Especially with those trees - sai doesn't support brushes, so I had to draw a branch and copy-paste probably 50 times, skewing them as I went.)

Nope, all digital, but I did actually go to a specific spot in the Tabantha area, right before it gets into snowy territory, and took a few screenshots for it. Plus a few others for that outfit, because I dyed it two different colors. (Which has become a nightmare now because my switch does the left stick drifting thing, and it's gotten so bad that Link just...runs off cliffs, or horses drift into walls and trying to correct it sometimes gets them stuck going right too. It's annoying but manageable in other games, but it has made trying to get through the last leg of the master trials pretty much impossible. Q_Q)

For the rocks I put a very low opacity photo of real rocks just to get that texture in, and painted over most of it, to at least a slight degree, to make it more cohesive. Everything else was done by hand, which in the case of the trees mostly meant scribbles with different colors. XD

Hi there! I'm from

This is a very cute picture! I always loved Epona in Zelda! I like the relationship that you show between Link and Epona, shown through the pose AND the eye contact that they have. The lighting is very nice too. It looks like a nice clear morning after spending the night sleeping outside. The texture of the grass is very nice too. It looks like there's a nice breeze that's making the long grass ripple, always a very pretty scene.Β
A couple things to consider though.Β
First: Link's pose looks a little unnatural to me. His knees are pulled up to tight to his chest--natural sleeping positions are usually more stretched out than that, even if it's just a little bit. With his knees pulled up like that he's almost in the fetal position and looks like he might be cold or scared rather than relaxed.Β
Second: Epona's hooves look kinda small. In Twilight Princess, Epona is designed similarly to a draft horse, which is how it looks you've made her here. And draft horses have HUGE hooves! If you compare the size of her hooves to the overall size of her body her hooves look too small to me.

This is a lovely picture though! You did a really good job and I hope you keep up the awesome work!

Thank you! I completely agree on Link's pose, and I knew there was something off about Epona's hooves, but I was looking at the reference photo thinking "but I already made them bigger??" (the photo was of like a 15 hh horse at best, naturally) XD

You're very welcome! I'm glad what I said made sense!

For the hooves....maybe try doing something like Clydesdale and Belgian horses have a make a longer/thicker hair poff around the hooves?Β Horse ?? But again, it's a really sweet picture and you should be proud of it!

Yes, I see now. Her legs should also probably be thicker next time I draw her. Thanks for the reference! I'm sure it will be useful.

Aww, thanks. This is one of my first finished works that I didn't really like that much, but it's nice to hear that someone else does. Β

Yes...if you have the Link amiibo (and she has 4 in every stat). You can also get wolf link via amiibo, but he's stuck at 3 hearts unless you have the wiiu version of Twilight Princess and beat the cave of ordeals, if I've heard correctly @~@

E1ectricShad0w In reply to KoreOfEmAll [2019-03-11 21:43:51 +0000 UTC]

That's fair. They're expensive and honestly botw has way too much content locked behind amiibos, plus DLC that's an extra 20 bucks....I love the game and it's one of my only two switch titles, so I was happy to get some of it, but the amiibosΒ  were gifts, I wouldn't go that far just for epona, wolf link, or costumes. I feel like that's one of the bigger flaws of the game that people don't like to talk about.

...That and loading screens or dropped framerates.

Hi! Commenting from ProjectComment

The composition of this piece is very good. The shading and use of color is very good and gives a very calm and relaxing feel. The texture for the grass, hair, fur, and firewood is very realistic and well done. Link is very expressive in both his face and his body language which adds to the overall feel of the piece.Β

There are some areas to improve, such as proportions. Link seems extremely small in comparison to Epona, who appears to take up about half the piece. The firewood also seems very small compared to the two characters, however this may be intentional. The trees seem to dwarf in comparison to Epona, which should either be the other way around or they should be about proportionate to one another.

Overall, this is a very well done piece, however there is some room for improvement in the proportions area. Keep drawing and keep improving!Β

Thank you! Yeah, I knew there were some flaws (tm) going into this one, I just didn't bother to fix them. It's always good to hear others' takes on it, though, lets me know where some of my blind spot are.
