Description
The duneswimmer is a fossorial pandler which has developed strengthened pandles and paddle-like, small limbs for efficient swimming through the soft sands. Their short, squat bodies have thick and leathery skin as well as lacking armor to better maneuver. The duneswimmer's are vestigial as it spends its whole life beneath the sands in total darkness. Feeding mainly upon underground parts of plants, they have mandibles suited for cutting up roots and a tough stomach with small gastrolith stones to help digest the plant matter. While solitary, they keep in contact with other duneswimmers by raising their head above the ground and producing a short, loud double click with their mandibles, heard for miles around. This noise is made during dusk and dawn usually, and helps duneswimmers locate each other to mate. They get all their moisture form their food and thus have no need to drink water. This animal has very sensitive hearing, felt as vibrations in their sensitive gastrolith, and they are highly aggressive with other members of the same sex. After mating both partners will go their separate ways and lay their eggs underneath the root system of a plant. There they will stay for a number of days waiting for their offspring to hatch, where they are cared for about two weeks before the babies are able to strike out on their own.
