Description Something a bit different. One of the various Christmas presents I've been working on over the last few weeks. I can put this one on-line as I know the person it's intended for wouldn't even know what dA is, let alone how to find it online!

So this is my gorgeous Willow. She's actually my best friend's mother's dog, a beautiful 6 year old Springer spaniel. She's got the most lovely nature and works wonderfully as a hot water bottle at night.

I always say I don't like drawing portraits, but this I actually quite enjoyed, even though it was aimed at being photorealistic, which is probably my least favourite thing ever LOL. But that's what the person in question wanted, so that's what she's got.

Time: about 3 or 4 hours on and off
Pencils: John will excommunicate me, but *gasps* H

She's beautiful. Uh... so how are you at hamsters, eh?

Yes, you know me. But I only knew a tiny facet of you -- the breadth of your work blows me away.

beautiiful dog. I originally wanted to get a springer spaniel, but my mom convinced me to get a cocker. Is it the liver and white variety or different colour?

Thank you! It was actually the first time I'd drawn fur for years and years and years - I was just lucky in that I know the dog in the pic very very well, and so I just knew how her fur worked, I didn't have to think *too* hard about it!

Thanks! And never again ... or at least, not for a long time. *shudders* One animal furry drawing per decade is enough for me!

I've been extremely neglectful to looking at your work lately, and boy, am I sorry! This is super. I'm working on paintings for presents ('cos everyone thinks they're getting jewelry. haha) because I wasn't sure if something in pencil would be be considered a fancy enough gift. Upon seeing this picture, I now realise that OF COURSE it is.

Best,

LG

Thank you I think pencil can be fine for presents - often it can capture something other media can't - at least I think so, but I always stand up for pencils!!

Beautiful pencilwork! I agree that a bit harder pencil like F or H is just perfect for a piece that involves careful lines and using the eraser.. The soft pencils smear and the lines become too dark too easily. It's better to gradually build up the darker areas and the harder pencil gives you more more control in that aspect. This looks really good.. beautiful shading; that must've taken a lot of patience to do!

I'm actually planning to do a little bit similar Christmas presents.. Large pencil (or possibly charcoal) portraits of my parents. I bought the frames already, now all i'll have to do is actually draw them..

Well John usually means that for sketches. I'm (pretty) sure it's ok to use for such a drawing... with all that fur it would takes ages to sharpen you pencil in between strokes
Lovely doggie.

I just *had* to use a mechanical pencil for this - I couldn't bear the idea of sharpening after every 5 dog hairs!

Just H - between HB and 2H, and totally not really the right pencil to do portraits of dark-coloured dogs with!!!
