It seems easy to wonder, even through the pain, where had he gone wrong? Not the deal, not the location, but in life. How foolish he'd been to think some pack of wasteland thugs would actually have a working car, let alone trade it to him for any number of treasures. He was desperate... "Any way to move mom without her having to walk," he'd said. "She won't survive the Pitt and neither will we. I'll find us a way out."
That exchange happened days ago, and now he'd probably never get the chance to apologize after letting his family down. Even as he sits against the withered, rusty carcass of a car long since irreparable, the wanderer can only give a pitiful whimper. A line of blood runs from the corner of his mouth like the tears streaming from his eyes, shut so tight you'd think he'd gone blind. The salt of his tears burns at his cheeks, washing away soot and grime.
It felt so good to cry, to acknowledge his failure openly and confess to his own mortality. He drew deep, ragged breaths and just sobbed like a child in misery, all the emotions kept back for years of wasteland living poured forth and into his weakened heart. With a flail, he cast aside the broken revolver his father left to him when taken to the fighter's pit; nary a piece of junk. Why would he need it? It didn't save him, and he can still remember his dad's face.
Suddenly, nothing in the world meant more to him than to remember his family in good graces. Memories of a short, harsh, but rich life with two sisters, a brother, a mom, a dad, and an uncle. A family of slaves who broke free, only to find they had nowhere to go. The brave and confident wanderer just had to volunteer a solo mission for some unknown artifact that could save all of them, and now... he would die alone, amidst ash and the corpses of his foes whose savagery would not go unrewarded.
Already, the wanderer's legs feel numb and his fingers grow cold as his precious lifeblood seeps into the dirt below. Still he cries, screaming into the arid sky for no one but himself to free all his pent up anger, sadness, and shame, until he can only choke in his aching throat. His anguish subsided, leaving him with an eerie sense of inner peace. Now's the time for last words, if he's got any.

"I love you, mama."

In so many games, people have forgotten what it means to be scouring the wastes and come upon a corpse lying on a dirty floor, or slumped against a rock in some scorpion-infested valley. Idle corpses, aside from their monetary or objective value, have become purely background objects of no emotional or contextual value.

I didn't even need a body in this picture to know that it holds a tragic story of someone like all of us; not only dreaming of better things but outright demanding fate to enable our unrealistic expectations, only to have it come crashing down on us in the worst way. A life destroyed, left to suffer in his final moments, wishing not for survival but only for the good fortune and prosperity of his kin.

Sometimes, disappointment is life's grand irony. I look upon the dead in every game, and think how terrible it is that they silent. Their stories never to be heard, their progress completely undone and perhaps their dreams unrealized... Some say the dead must be buried to put them at rest, but I say it's to alleviate the horrible reminder that we are all doomed to disappointment. Not that life is pointless, but that it can stab you in the back when you least expect it.

I wish to feel that pain, when I look upon the dead and imagine where it was they tried to go, or why. Don't bury them... mourn their losses, and hope that you don't suffer the same. It feels good to cry.
