Description
A hard left buried itself into her lower stomach, quickly followed by an extremely powerful hit to the solar plexus, as her upper body instinctively jerked forward. Her feet must have left the ground from the immense force. A jolt of electricity shot through her body, all her muscles tensed. Jo opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Her breath stuck in her throat, as her lungs seemed to deflate like an opened balloon, painfully squeezing her chest together.
What a hit!, Jo thought. Jade may not have had the technical finesse of someone like Megan or the brutal strength of Sarah, but more than made up for it with her ferocious attitude. Not giving her an opportunity to recover, the latina pursued further, throwing punch after punch as Jo retreated in disarray, throwing her hands around her head. Thankfully none of the blows were as potent as that solar plexus shot, but some of them still stung. Every step back was matched by Jade, who attacked like a shark smelling blood in the water. Jo gritted her teeth, struggling to stay on her feet as her body was constantly rocked with hooks and jabs. She had to come up with a plan very soon, or else this fight wouldn’t continue for much longer.
In a fight, protecting oneself was of paramount importance, even more so than landing a hit on one’s opponent. At any given time, if one attempted an attack they had to make sure to evade the opponent’s attempt. This had been true in the case of medieval duels where even lethally wounded, a man could deal a deadly blow with his weapon. Even in modern mma fights, the risk of getting KOed remained. Jo and every fighter she knew, abided by this maxime to a degree, some more, some less. Every elite fighter could expect their opponent to prioritize safety over winning. But sometimes, the situation called for taking a risk. And this was one of them.
Instead of further trying to escape, Jo lunged forward, bracing for a clinch and preparing a knee strike. Jade reacted instantly. Out of nowhere, an elbow appeared in her field of view and rushed towards her face at an alarming speed. There was no time for blocking. In a desperate effort, she threw her body to the side, feeling a gust of wind on her cheek. Spinning around, Jade kicked after her, hitting her thigh. Jo rolled over her shoulder and stood back up again, feeling a light sting in her left upper leg. Not nearly as bad as getting one’s nose smashed in, though.
With Jade charging at her again, Jo had to think of a new strategy for how to overcome her reach disadvantage. And quickly. She lowered herself, squatting down, until her right hand touched the ground. Jade’s approach slowed down, as her brows furrowed, seemingly unsure of this unorthodox stance. Still, she continued her attack. Jade went for a low kick, exactly how anticipated. Jo pushed herself off the ground, throwing her legs into the air, while her hand remained on the mat, and kicked high in a crescent motion.
While the move did not land, it stopped Jade dead in her tracks. A moment of hesitation was all Jo needed. Keeping her center low, she approached her opponent, feigned a left cross, only to place the hand on the ground once again. In a swift motion, mimicking a one armed handstand, she kicked with her right heel, and this time, her efforts were crowned with success. Jade fell for the feint and was struck by the kick hitting her in the head. Disoriented, the latina finally backed off, giving them both a few precious seconds to recover.
The fact that Jade had taken multiple direct hits to her head and was still able to walk in a straight line, spoke to her toughness. What didn’t this girl have? She was aggressive, fearless, fast, strong, tall, and also tough as nails! Shanna had been right, this was indeed a good learning opportunity.
As she glanced towards the clock, she noticed the time had almost elapsed. Twenty seconds left. Now or never. A last chance to go all out and show what she was made of. One look at Jade told her that the latina was thinking the same thing.
“Ready for a little bit more?” She said with a wink.
“You bet!”
“Try to keep up then!” Jade exclaimed and leapt towards her.
