Description south shore of lake superior

expired kodak professional ultracolor film
holga 120gn

i was working from an 8x8 enlargement for this scan. i loved the way the natural earth tones (grays, peaches, greens, and blues) came out as a result of using expired film. i also loved the silky smooth quality of the water washing back from the sand and of the the movement of clouds and water in general. i'm a sucker for the beauty of film. with a toy camera, it can deliver such painterly subtlety.

if i were a painter...

You are right, the painterly effect is marvelous.

this is one of the pieces of mine that i can honestly say i love. it is esoteric, and i don't think my regular audience (well the lion's share of it) is ready or really cares about this piece.

You have found a fan in me. I love things that are almost completely unrecognizable... smooth and subtle. Now that I think of it, I like life that way. not that I am NOT dramatic to the nth degree and love to see it in others. But mostly I love to look for the nuances... the small changes in gradation, texture, sight signs of light in the eyes, a twist of the head, a touching of hand to hand...the very very small and subtle parts of life that must be read, must be almost intuited in order to understand them. makes me sound kind of crazy... because I also love the big giant excitement of my own and others too.... oh well. We are all complex.

It reminds me of that amazing majic memory box. There seems so visual the sand and surf, wind and water, sun..

yes, this one has not done well with favorites, but it is, truthfully, one of my favorites i have done. too esoteric for my audience i suppose. i love the color the film rendered. i love the softness that the holga produced (i think it was not set to a landscape but a closer setting and i didn't notice at the time). thanks for looking at the subtle and esoteric.

aaaahhhhh... favorites/smavorites... it is nice image... and i think it is lovely... the color is fantastic... and i can imagine it as a large print... which would make this image very painterly...

it is my pleasure, ms e... as always...

thanks. i agree that favorites can be misleading. so can catering to an audience you've acquired. it must change... the first idea.

i owe you a HUGE thank you... i didn't know his work... and, after doing a bit of research, i realized i absolutely need to... his ideas are dead-on some of the issues/concepts that i focus on... in my work and in my life... and his work is fantastic...

thank you, ms e!...

wallace stevens is fucking wonderful. (sorry 'bout the language.) he was the president of a major insurance company and a pulitzer prize winning poet all at once.

i'm also very fond of john berryman, sylvia plath, and (early) jorie graham.

when it comes to poetry, i am not well read... i know sylvia, of course... i'll have to check out the other two...

oh... i more thing... something that might amuse you... look at the birthplace listed for wallace at the top of this article ...

Such lovely divide in the colors. Very surreal shot. Great lines in the sky and water(?); the clouds and waves(?). Really neato. (That's right, i said neato. What are you gonna do about it?)
