Description I'm not sure if it's actually using the box though. We'll have to wait and see
I also don't know if I got the crop right. Any suggestions? Should I cut off more of the house or the right side?
Full view please!

The first thing and the most impressive thing I want to say when enjoy your photo is that: Great composition! I really like how you left the space in the right side of the photo, so that the bird's vision could be express so well. I also love the focus you put on this bird with bokeh of lights and super blurry background, which create a nice effect. Very well done!

Thank you very much! I'm happy that you like it It's interesting how many different answers I got concerning the frame but the general opinion seems to be that the space on the right looks good so I think I'll keep it.

Very nice shot! I really like the focus on the bird and it makes me curious to get to know where it is looking at.Β

I wouldn't crop more of the house, instead I would crop a part from the right side (the light blurry part right from the tree) or make i a bit darker/less exposure on the right. So all the lighting is focused around the bird and makes my eye fly to it

I like the composition of this one a lot! And colours here are just perfectly in harmony with each other
The best here i'd say the bokeh with a bird looking to the opposite direction. It creates some cool story somehow

Thank you very much! Now that you've mentioned a story, it does look as bit as if it could be waiting for its mate to come home...

Lovely picture!Β The image conveys a great feeling of calm and tranquility and the focus is absolutely perfect!!! The background helps define the environment in which the bird gets involved with some mystery . The framework, absolutelyΒ impressive. I felt I had to addΒ this photo to my favorites. :$ Please,Β keep shooting that way!

I think the aperture you chose is perfect. The background has the lovely "bubbly" look of the sky peeking through the trees that I love, but the foreground is still wonderfully crisp. Β I like the minimal colors; with green being the most dominant color, then yellow, blues, and browns. This photo also fits well in the rule of thirds, with the tree in the background cutting the picture at the 2/3 point, and the birdhouse hole lined up on the opposite side. Therefore, I like the way you cropped it and don't think you need to cut more of the birdhouse out. If I were to suggest a change, I would say to darken the highlights in the background, especially around the bird's body. The bright highlights in the back are nice, but are a little distracting from the bird. Also, you could lighten the blue feathers on the back of the birds so as to show more detail. This are just small fixes, and overall, this is a great piece. Well done.Β

Thank you very much for this insightful comment and your kind words
So far my post-processing has mostly been about changing contrast and saturation a bit as well as making backgrounds more blurry where it seemed necessary (not in this one though). So I've never tried editing specific parts of my photos to make them brighter or darker but I will definitely try it out when the opportunity arises.

Well, good luck! I suggest editors such as Adobe Photoshop Express, Polarr, and Pixlr. All are free. With Photoshop Express and Polarr, you could darken the highlights(or burn them in Pixlr) to help with the background. Also, if you want, you could use Polarr and bring up the luminance of the blues to lighten the bird's feathers.Β

Thanks! Maybe I'll have a look at your suggestions So far I'm working with a combination of Gimp 2.8 for all sorts of stuff and RawTherapee. I haven't done much with RawTherapee though, so first I want to learn how to work with that programme properly before moving on

The programs I suggested are all simpler than GIMP. They are also photography specific, and I feel they worked well when I was learning post-production. I still use them now, with Pixlr and GIMP being my more advanced ones I use. I'm certainly no expert.Β Β

Ok, then with enough time they should be no problem I think I can work with Gimp quite well, I've been using it for years - also for digital paintings and other stuff - but I've only started with some "serious" photo editing about a month ago, so there I'm still a newbie

Ha, I don't think I even do "serious" editing, and I've been doing post for about a year.Β Β

Gorgeous shot! I love that it's looking back and I think that your cropping is well done because of that detail; it leaves ambiguity as to what the tit seems to be looking back atΒ Β

I like it where it is. It's cute, and the eye is clearly drawn to the bird, be it slightly off center. (:
