Description A pair of crocheted knee socks I made a while back. I've only recently re-discovered the pictures. Unfortunately, the stitching I had used sewing one of the the elastic bands together snapped right before these pics were taken, and it had to be held together with a safety pin.

There's actually a funny story behind the creation of these...

A few years ago I was in a scouting group, and we had a leader who was fond of jokes. He used to tell us our socks were untied to make us look down, and I fell for it EVERY time.

So, I decided to play a joke on him. I made these socks to wear to a meeting, under a longish skirt so you couldn't immediately tell what my socks looked like. I deliberately left one sock untied. The next time he pulled that joke on me, I said "thank you", reached down, and tied my sock.

It was priceless. I just wish I'd had a video camera.

Thank you!
Before these, I had never made any socks either. It turned out to be easier than I thought at first, and it definitely was fun!

I'm glad you like them! I don't have a pattern or I'd post it, but you can always try to make your own.

basically, crochet a tube with decreases to fit your foot, make a heel kind of like this diagram shows: [link] Then crochet another tube for the ankle and leg with increases to fit. When you reach the point you want the sock to split for the lacing, start doing back and forth rows instead of a closed tube until your sock is as long as you like it. The top of the sock can be made with spaced stitches to thread an elastic band through. Then crochet loops down either side of the front opening for the ribbon, lace the ribbon up, and thread it through the spaced stitches at the top over the elastic band. tie a bow, and you're done!

oh WOW. I wish I knew how to crochet socks... Haven't really tried just yet. Then again, I've never had any urge to make any particular pattern that I've seen out there.......

Do you think you'd post the pattern up for this? I would really love to make a pair of my own. This is a beautiful design.. really well done!!

Thank you!

These were actually my first attempts at socks, crocheted or otherwise. I still can't knit them! They were done mostly by feel, and a lot of trying on and taking off during the process. It took me forever to finish.

Unfortunately, I can't post a pattern because I didn't use one. I took notes while crocheting, but these were made quite some time ago and the notes have long been lost. If I ever run across the notes, or if I make another pair with new directions, I'll be certain to post the pattern.

If you do decide to try and make your own pair from scratch, please feel free to ask all questions you like and I'll try to help in any way I can.

I'm sorry. I wish I could be of more help.

Aww phooey!

Well, right off the bat... how did you do the heel in crochet? (I don't know how to knit very well either.. I have always wanted to make my own socks, darnit--but the heel is what I keep seeing as the most difficult part of the sock!!! T____T)

Otherwise, everything else looks pretty much like a tube, am I right?

And thanks so much for letting me know, at least. It's awesome to see free-form! Some amazing projects (like this) come out of it (even if it takes forever)

I think the heel is the most difficult part, too. But your crochet gallery is awesome, so I'm sure you'll be able to do much better with the shaping than I could! I'm not really all that experienced. Most of the stuff I crochet is small and lacy. XD

Ok. I may not have the notes anymore, but I still have the socks. I only vaguely remember what I did for the heel, so my explanation may not be perfect. I'm not that great at explaining things like this, but I'll do my best...

You were right about most of the sock being a tube. the only shaping is increases and decreases where needed to widen or narrow the sock to fit my leg. I wasn't very good at shaping crochet then, so the sock doesn't fit perfectly and elastic at the top is needed to hold it in place. I think if I ever make these socks again, I could probably do a lot better. I was experimenting with these, and the methods I used to shape them were kind of crude and sloppy. XD

Basically, I crocheted a tube to fit my foot, and when I reached my heel I tied off the yarn, and started a new panel at the bottom of the sock. I started increasing to make sure there was plenty of room for my heel, Then decreasing after the panel was past the end my foot and over my heel. I made the panel about twice as long as my heel in total, and tied it off.

I took that panel and folded it up, then added a gusset on both sides between the heel piece and the foot piece. (I tried the sock on first, and messed with the heel piece until it looked right. Then I measured the distance between the two pieces so I would know how big the gusset should be.)

There was an uneven space between the top of the foot piece and the heel, (the border ws irregularly shaped) so I filled it in until it was even. Not the best way to do things, I know.

At this point I basically had something that was a little shorter than an ankle sock. I tied on the yarn again, and started another tube up my ankle, until I reached the point I wanted my sock to split for the laces. From there, I just made rows back and forth, without joining into a tube until the socks were as high as I wanted.

I made a little diagram to show what did with the heel, although I'm not certain of how accurate my drawings are. It should give you a basic idea anyway. You can find it here: [link]

I'm sorry this explanation isn't the greatest! I hope it made a little sense at least and you can get something out of it, anyway.

Oh my! Honestly.. this is VERY helpful! I was thinking of a completely different way to make a heel... I'm pretty sure this will work so much better (and would probably fit more comfortably, too!!!! hahaha)

Man; socks do sound difficult, but I really love your design and would love to try something like it sometime!

Thank you soooooooo much for taking the time to explain this, and thanks too, for making a diagram. Together it really does help me to visualize this. I really want to do this now!

EruwaedhielElleth In reply to Stromasdragon [2012-01-27 21:40:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

I didn't have any pattern, so the socks are slightly different from each other.

I basically just crocheted a tube to fit my foot, added a flap for a heel (That was a real pain to figure out) and then joined them and continued crocheting upwards with increases until it was as high as I wanted. I attached it to an elastic band and laced ribbon up the front.

I kind of wrote down what I did while making the first sock, so I could duplicate it with the second, but I didn't do a very good job, so there are some inconsistencies between the two. XD
