Description Sunset - Floating Island, Lake Tahoe, USA

A few thoughts...

Floating Island is finally an island again after an epic winter of 80+ feet of snow, that may have made up for the 5 straight years of extreme drought lake has endured.

Most of that snow fell between January and February - only 2 months! Last day of snow this year - June 13th  5" - 8"

Creeks in the area are straight up freaking rivers right now! And they are numerous. If your dog falls in one, it's better to get in your car and head to the beach - he or she will be waiting there for you.

The yellow stuff is pollen floating on the water. Beautiful for contrasting colors on a photograph, but no good to swim in!

Trying to group 3 almost-primary colors on the same image with this much intensity, while also exposing foreground objects, is a pain in the ass to process, but I think I did it well? Hopefully it displays on other monitors well.

Before this photo was taken, I hadn't been out to photograph since the beginning of February!

Upon arrival to this lovely location, I dropped my remote in lake right away, losing it forever...

As usual this is an absolutely stunning piece of photography that brings together beautiful elements of water and sky. It really is an impressive piece of work.

I think this is more original than a lot of your work because the photo is taken from an angle over a bend of land as well as showing the little group of rocks with something tall stretching out of it I also like how half of the water is reflecting the sunset and half isn't, really makes this photo stand out.

The technique used to take this photograph is really amazing. The photo isn't that stunning but there is a nice atmosphere captured in it.

Overall this photo evokes no strong feelings but it invokes a simple sort of pleasure. Really nice work, keep it up!

Yay for the island. o/ I think you did well with the colours. The foreground looks especially good. The red in the clouds might be a bit over-saturated - however there are some sunsets that are just that insane, so it's hard to make a final judgement.

I think you can't spot the yellow pollen on the water in this resolution. At least I can't.

It's sad that you dropped your remote. You can prolly calculate the time it needs until it will be degraded, lol. I have bought a remote a couple of months ago and have used it exactly zero times to this day. I think I am a moron.

When pollen meets water, it clumps and turns into a paint-like substance. Take a look at the image again and imagine that the large swath of sandbars are actually pollen. Your so funny - I think you are trying to look to hard!

I'm going to redo the sky because I have some Magenta banding going on towards the top - it doesn't appear in the full resolution version of this, just when I downsize it for DA. I had to desaturate the sky and bushes quite a bit to make this image work and be "believable". The red in the sky tends to turn the atmosphere red, which creates an ugly red cast on images, and the bushes turn neon green. So, in order to make this safe for internet use (lol) I have removed the red cast, and desaturated the sky and bushes.

I have since purchased a new remote and am still baffled at the fact that none of them come with a string or ANY place to attach one. I am going to have to drill a hole in it and hope I drill through a spot that is not circuit board. I'll add a string and tie it to my belt loop, hopefully. Otherwise, a slippery plastic remote is just begging to be dropped. I realized after dropping the remote, that since the subject had never come up before, I have no clue on how to use the "timer" in the camera. I had leaned on the tripod and carefully press the shutter button to take a picture. These high-end cameras let you flip the mirror up before taking a picture, so that nothing vibrates the camera when releasing the shutter to maxify the detail/sharpness and to have the least amount of blur at large print sizes. What I found when I got home and studied the images up close, was that I could really tell no difference in using the remote for stability or carefully pressing the button on the camera. The images, when enlarged to full size on my monitor were as sharp as always! Using a remote seems to be for convenience rather than an anti-shake tool in low lighting.

Anyways - too much rambling! lol!

I thought those were small waves. Hm. Doesn't look that yellow to me but maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing again...

I really don't get what dev.art does to the images. Sometimes they look gorgeous when you upload them and sometimes they look completely different than what you had on your PC. It's really weird.

Remote shutters are definitely for convenience. Especially for selfies. Jokes aside, I think a timer works great. I follow 2 photographers on youtube and they both use the timer at times they forgot their remote. Quality-wise it indeed seems like a non-issue if you are careful.
Since I own a mirror-less camera I don't have the issue of vibration due to an opening mirror. I have put the timer on some fast-access key so I can always reach it quickly when I need it (aka when I don't shoot hand-held). I think because of that it's not that inconvenient for me to use the timer instead of the remote... Maybe I have to force myself to use it someday so it won't go to waste.

Remotes are good for selfies - I for one don't like taking pictures of myself, but they look cool if done right. A timer could still work, but you'll be out of breath! Anyways - do what works for you. If it were a problem, you would see the benefit of using the remote, otherwise, if you don't know what you're missing, it doesn't hurt.

Deviant art will resize the image (not the pixel count if you upload at the recommended "fixed"sizes) in terms of jpeg compression like Facebook does when you upload a photo. If the amount of colors to properly reproduce your image online are not available within the color spectrum, gamut, etc. that certain color will be replaced with the closest match. Sometimes this cause banding because the next available color doesn't match. The sky is either going to have green, blue, or red banding. In my case, my sky is leaning towards the red side producing magenta bands. When I print the large version, the printer will be using photoRGB to print, so therefore it will most likely have the colors I need, because the reduced quality sRGB image I have now, doesn't. My Monitor displays 104% sRGB - that extra 4% covers a larger swath of the green side of the color spectrum, therefore leaning away from magenta, and having a better balanced photo in terms of color blending throughout.

I can relate, I don't like taking pictures of myself. That's because I ruin them with my presence. I took a few in the US with a 10s timer and using one of them as my profile picture here (the small one) and on whatsapp. A 10s timer can be scatchy though. Probably shouldn't have used it in the Grand Canyon in front of a cliff with a multiple hundred meter drop-down, lol. I will take the remote to Canada and see if I'm going to use it.

Thanks for all the technical info. This really is rocket science, what the hell.

Hah, I have defended myself well against the constant assault of people around me regarding me not having facebook. By now, most of my friends dislike it. They either deleted their accounts or don't use it anymore. I call that a win in an idealistic war! lol

Seriously though, I'm sorry we won't be able to keep up that way. For now, DA seems to do a decent enough job though until a better solution pops up. I must say I'm a fan of instant messengers for this kind of stuff. I grew up with ICQ and Skype in my teens so that's probably the reason. I can't stand this whole Facebook, Twitter, Instagramm nonsense. To me it looks like a constant barrage of messages I mostly don't care about. Instead I like to "manually" hold contact with people and ask questions about things that seem interesting. It's much more direct and personal imho. And way more efficient regarding the percentage of useful, exchanged information.

You have done quite well to avoid the peer pressure of joining facebook. Well done... lol! "Manual Contact" sounds dirty (you wouldn't want to keep "manual contact" with your weird uncle), but is a better form of socializing Instagram Sucks - everyone is either a professional photographer or a model; that's easy when people only have to look at a 5x2.5cm picture. Everything at that size looks fantastic!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eegariM In reply to EtherealSceneries [2017-07-11 20:46:13 +0000 UTC]

Uh, does manual have a different connotation than in german? I understand what you are getting at but in germany manual contact simply describes the form of contact. As in, manual as opposed to automated, not that you are touching each other or so, lol. What would be the right vocabulary to use in english?
I didn't mean Instagramm btw. but Snapchat... But yeah, Instagramm seems quite silly, too. I don't know, at 5x2,5 I don't think anything looks fantastic because you can't see any details anyways.

ROTFLMAO!! In america, you can string together almost any set of words and make it "dirty". It's a great American pass-time to do this while drinking! It is what we call "when your mind is in the gutter". I wish I was joking... btw, I did not vote for Trump!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eegariM In reply to EtherealSceneries [2017-07-12 14:54:48 +0000 UTC]

Eh, you can prolly do that in germany, too. Actually, it's not that uncommon I suppose. I just didn't expect you to make this sort of joke in a conversation like this, lol.

Also what? Your election was like a year ago and Trump has been in office for half a year but now is the time you want to make sure that I don't think you voted for Trump? lol... Let's be honest here, I never thought of that any second. You never came across as either naive or an idiot, which are the two categories of people who would vote for him. Thinking about it, we even talked some politics and about the media (fox etc.) when we were ascending mount rose... So, how come you mentioned it now? Because of G20?

EtherealSceneries In reply to eegariM [2017-07-13 17:23:40 +0000 UTC]

lol - I make strange untimely comments all the time. It's who I am. I like to be lighthearted and not super serious.

I brought up the trump thing because, first, people elsewhere assumed that over half the population voted for him (which isn't true) and second, because of my comment about "dirty word linking" when drinking. I was joking about it and didn't want to come across as being a Trump type of mentality. I would have voted for Bernie Sanders, and I think Europe would have loved him, unlike Trump or almost as bad - Hilary Clinton. I would think that Germany so far has been the most offended and turned off from trump and the US as a whole. I have a fleeting hope that he can get his shit together and do something right, but it's not looking good. I would be pushing for impeachment like everyone else, but his Vice President (Mike Pence) is worse than Trump, but just better spoken and quieter. I take Trump over Pence as would all women if they knew what his policies would be.

Anyways - I do dislike politics, so sorry for bringing it up at all! lol And yes, from what I hear G20 was embarrassing. But at least Trump shook Merkel's hand this time and didn't shove anyone out of the way! haha

I kind of knew you would of voted for Bernie. Maybe you even told me but it was pretty clear from our conversation. Europe would have certainly loved Bernie. Well everyone but those pesky polish people (j/k). I think most people here just don't take him serious. He is a pretty positive factor for the popcorn industry but that's it. It's just sad that we need to wait 4 years until we can do some serious politics with the US again.

The moment when Trump ignored Merkel for the handshake was so good. Her mimic was pure gold. It's even funnier because she is often mocked for her "non-mimic". What I also thought was very funny was when Trump threatened Germany with trade sanctions because of their high car-sales in the US. In response I think either Gabriel or Merkel said that the US is selling more cares in Germany than Germany is selling in the US, so the trade sanctions would be counterproductive for the US...

I know Mike Pence is worse policy-wise. He is just not as much of an idiot... I mean, everytime I see a Trump-Tweet in a video I always think it must be satire (like in the Daily Show etc.). Then it turns out to be real. It's just unbelievable. With Pence as president that would never happen, everything would go down the drain quietly without outrage. I think that would be more horrible because right now there is at least resistance.

I live just south of Placerville (for over 9 years now and I STILL have cardinal direction issues up there, lol) I've actually only stopped and shot at Sand Harbor once - we're usually on our way somewhere else, lol...always wondered if it made an island but we seem to never make it up to that side of the lake until Fall when the water level is down! Hopefully this years snow pack keeps things full all year... here's my one time of shooting - which I think is the other side of the theater area from your shot...

I'm not sure where this is, however , there aren't many boulders on the West shore, so I would think that this is southlake on the southeast side of the lake? I know what you mean about living so close but never going. I have been meaning to get to Hope Valley, but it never happens. If you are ever interested, I could help you find some of these places on a map. I am not sure that any island forms a Sand Harbor with the exception of random boulders which in this case would actually be under water now or a lot closer! Thank you for sharing.
