Metade Fumaca . . .

I was at a shootout for some product photography for some wafer agency yesterday. Weather, lighting, and even the location were all against us but it had to be done as it all costed money to the model, the agencies involved, the clients of the agencies, etc. While on a break, I thought I'd do things I'm more familiar with - deviating from the eye-candy stuffs the agency wanted me to take of.

The location was my favorite. I have brought friends here to do shoots of me once and I thought it would be a definite plus to use it as well when the agency wanted someplace run-down. Still, even if you as a model photographer... location, lighting, understanding postures, facial expressions, compositions, the shebangs, all would be flushed down the sewers and eaten by rats if you don't have the model + photographer interactions and rapport - especially when you've just met the person who's gonna be in front of your lens. Constantly keeping the model comfy and chatty helps break the ice and letting the model do what she/he can do best for you is the most fundamental essence of portraitures that brings out a more emotive sense to your photographs.

Heck, sometimes you don't even need all the lighting equipments, reflectors, flashes, etc if you let yourself control the camera and not the other way round - plus knowing your locations inside out. This shot was taken off-set when it was raining and heavily overcast with that much natural light to play with. Yet it worked for me just fine and I'm sure would do the same for you too if you don't let force majure get in your way.

Man that's a beautiful wall, it for sure had seen a lot in it's life time, all those cracks and stains show us that it has gone through much.
Seeing that girl against the wall gives us the assumption that she is lost in the magic/energy that this wall radiates, she's astonished and I can say that by just looking at that amazing expression on her face.
Terrific colors and tones, composition and model.

wow! i also love the quality of light you get when the sky is overcast. you get this nice diffused light, and sometimes the most you need is a reflector to bounce light back into the face to fill in some details. sometimes you dont have to do anything at all and everything just seems right. you captured such a nice moment with your model here. very natural. and that background you chose is awesome! i love this dude!

evanhwong In reply to misternow [2005-09-23 15:27:06 +0000 UTC]

you love this dude or you love this, dude? hhmmm.... hehehehehe!

Well, no reflector, no bounce or fill or flash or what nots... just the camera, a kit lens, a gorgeous wall, and a bombshell! ...i'm just content with what i have and that i hope would tell the world they dont need the shebangs that cost arms and legs to just take that shot...

Thank you again...

No ah... some model the agency hired to shoot. I doubt i can keep up to her schedule anyway - right after the shoot she's off back to London... Typical hotshots... pfft...

Besides, u'r still me ...

anon-irisX [2005-09-14 02:39:34 +0000 UTC]

Hey this is really cool Evan. $50 says the company loved it.

Thanks for that description also -- I actually learned some stuff about portraiture from it.

My uncle's asked me to shoot his wedding, which is in three weeks. Yikes. I'm a gunna be mega crazy nervous.

I agree you don't need all that other stuff -- and this shot just proves it right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

evanhwong In reply to anon-irisX [2005-09-14 15:21:47 +0000 UTC]

So... the $50 goes to? Lemme give it to a charity of your choice then... Yes, the agency loved the series and had a hard time choosing the best for the ad they gonna put up next week...

Well, try get the behind-the-scenes of the wedding as well... Don't let 'em pose for you but just get your fingers ready on the trigger every second of the way so u're prepared to shoot anytime you see something that's shoot-worthy coming your way. And remember, it's all in the event, not how you choose to change it.

Good luck! :hug;

anon-irisX In reply to evanhwong [2005-09-15 03:17:44 +0000 UTC]

I hate posing people... so at the wedding I don't want to be posing at all. All I can picture at the moment of what I'm going to take are just the traditional boring old couple pics -- and there's nothing really artistic about them. I'll just have to see what happens when the time comes.

Thank you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

evanhwong In reply to anon-irisX [2005-09-17 05:37:22 +0000 UTC]

Posings are for candy shots only... but for something more sentimental, take it as and when it happened..

Hey, traditional boring old couple pics can bring meaning to your works as well... Put a baby in the picture and call it "3 generations appart" and you still can bring it to work to your fullest!

Good luck!

anon-irisX In reply to evanhwong [2005-09-17 09:31:05 +0000 UTC]

I guess you're right about the boring pics... I actually have a couple of smick ideas in my head now... but it would involve exactly the right coloured wall, and it'd also involve posing. Grr. I don't like having to pose people.
