Shattered Memories

While the sun was rising over the Capital of Light, Baticul, the 17 year old boy with long blood red hair and black armor sat on a rock near the edge of the crater looking at the castle and the rest of nobility that sat atop it all.  He closed his eyes remembering all the times he spent there all those years ago.  Specifically a promise he made all those years ago to the Princess that lived in that specific castle.

"Doesn't his highness care about this country, Natalia," the young 8 year old, short red haired boy asked the blond hair, blue eyed, 9 year old, Princess sitting beside him after they had went to the lower tiers and saw the suffering of the people there.

"He does, he's just stretched thin, Luke," Natalia said, not sure if what she was saying was true or not but she felt like she needed to defend her father, "I do want to help them though."

"So do I, I love our country of Kimlasca-Lavender and that includes the people in it," Luke said, looking up at the sky, "When we marry Natalia, I want to help the people of this country."

"So do I Luke," Natalia said with a smile, looking at him, hugging him tightly.

"Alright then let's make a promise," Luke said, rolling his eyes at her hugging him but continued, "Repeat after me.  Some day, when we're grown up, let's change this country."

"Some day, when we're grown up, let's change this country," Natalia repeated pulling away looking at him.

"Change it so that no one has to be poor.  Change it so that war never happens," Luke said, looking at her blue eyes with his own green.

"Change it so that no one has to be poor.  Change it so that war never happens," she repeated looking back at him smiling.

Luke nodded as he finished the promise, "Let's work to change our country.  For the rest of our lives.  Together."

"Let's work to change our country.  For the rest of our lives.  Together," Natalia promised then held her hand up wanting to pinky swear, "Let's pinky swear on it."

"Not going to happen, that is childish Natalia especially for a big promise like this," Luke said, looking at her then shook his head, "Just promise."

"Alright, I promise," Natalia pouted still wanting to pinky swear.

"Master Luke, General Grants is here for your training," Guy called from the door of the court yard.

"General Asch, our presence it requested in Malkuth to help with the operation," one of his few special operatives said, having come to find him from camp, "We just got the message from one of General Arietta's birds."

The young man, now known as Asch, looked from the rock then nodded jumping down from it walking back to camp.  He wasn't the Luke that his memories often went to at least not anymore.  That Luke was shattered long ago.  He didn't know why he always came back to this spot when he knew that well.  For now he would just continue to be the ashes of a man, the pawn in the grand scheme of things since he was easily replaced.

From the time he had finally escaped and made his way back to Batical to only see that clone in his place with Natalia, his family, and Guy all helping that imposter into society.  Grants was right, he was easy to replace.

He had turned and ran away hearing Natalia's voice to that new Luke, "Oh Luke please hurry up and remember our promise."

He knew from that moment he was nothing but ash.
