Description This was obviously pretty quick and dirty, but after spending around 6 hours painting tree bark today, I wanted to speedpaint something fun. So have a Microraptor doing a threat display, inspired by this fantastic photo of an eagle-owl.

Many animals, when threatened, will use absolutely everything in their power to make themselves look bigger. There are endless artworks out there of Microraptor using its legwings for the obvious function - to fly or glide - but if trying to make itself look bigger, the little dromaeosaur has an obvious advantage over its two-winged brethren.

Such a little poof.

Omg, such a cute little floof!Β
I remember our roosters puffing up their neck feathers in the "I'mma get you" stance. I can't help but picture a tiny dinobird of some sort doing that too!Β

give it time, if people have made goats that make spider silk instead of milk i think a crow with wing legs shouldn't be too far off

Thank you! I don't usually attempt photorealism in my work, but I'm happy that it sometimes comes off that way.

"inspired by this fantastic photo of an eagle-owl."

That must be 1 lucky owl (in reference to the rabbit foot). As for the deviation itself, not my favorite poofy dromaeosaur ( [link] ), but very nice nonetheless. I especially like the poofy look w/4 wings.

NerysGhemor [2012-11-29 04:48:44 +0000 UTC]

Very nice! While we will never know how these creatures behaved, this seems like a very reasonable explanation besides warmth as to why the feathers would've gotten so large before flight was ever a possibility.
