Description flowers bought at a farmer's market stand in Vermont 2015

like I mentioned in .bergamot. , my more recent artwork has steered away from obsessive pointillism and focused more on constructing intricate line work. I'd love to hear what you think about this new style and if you have any feedback for me! this piece was originally designed for a friend who was looking to have a few flowers tattooed on her shoulder blade, and I'd definitely be interested in taking commissions for designs in the future xo

I love line works! You did a wonderful job making the flowers realistic by only lines. The unevenly distributed petals make the flowers more natural and wild. Yet they still hold beauty in them. Somehow I can imagine them having soft and pale colour, like some dried flowers, maybe it's because of how you drew the petals that make me think they're very delicate and fragile.
Besides the realistic large flowers, I also see the petals and the centers of the smaller flowers look more simple and cartoon-ish compared to the two larger flowers. It's as if their purpose are decorations and to bring out the larger flowers- their style plus the way they face outwards.

Honestly, I don't know what to suggest for improvement! You piece is very neat and beautiful already. The design is also very thoughtful. Do you mind if I ask some questions instead? The second largest flower seem to have a rather big center, it's really dark too and managed to steal some attention. What is that fruit-like shape? Is there really a flower like this?

Thank you so much for such a lovely and thoughtful comment! I was definitely trying to contrast the style of the smaller flowers against the larger ones so that the focus was really on the center, so I'm glad you were able to pick up on the difference. And you're totally right about the upper flower stealing some of the spotlight because the center was darkened. It actually was that dark, although looking back I do wish I had toned it down a bit. I can't remember what the name of the flower is, but here's the bouquet I picked for reference:

Yes! Just a few black micron pens in varying thickness (I think 005 to 05)

From Project Comment:

At first glance I was tempted to discard is as a simple sketch, but  couple of seconds or really looking at it revealed some very definite and interesting artistic choices.  Your use of differing line thicknesses shows intentionality, and the almost haphazard appearance f the flower petals resonates with reality such that I must imagine this was drawn from life, not pure imagination (or else your imagination is unusually attentive to reality).  Your subject is well balanced in the space. Your line-work have a feeling of rigidness or stiffness to them and I'm unsure if that was intentional.  It makes the flowers feel almost artificial, which the petal arrangement contradicts.  That apparent conflict makes the piece interesting to me.

i missed that this was intended as a tattoo until after I commented above.  I'm not really a fan of tattoos (even though I've designed a few), so I wouldn't dare comment on its suitability for that. I was interacting with it as a stand-alone piece of art.  I hope my comments are still helpful.

Thank you so much for such a thorough comment! When I drew this image I was in the process of transitioning my art style from primarily dot art to line art, and so I was definitely experimenting with line thickness here. And that's definitely an interesting contradiction that you picked up here. I'm not sure that it was my intention to give off a feeling of stiffness in this piece, but again, I was experimenting with new ways of shading that only used lines and so I see how it could be interpreted as that.

And your comments were super helpful, so thanks

Happy to help.  Of all the little joys in life, I think nit picking is my favorite.

As a sketch or painting this is a lovely design. it shows a lot of detail without being crowded. However, speaking as a person with an interest in tattoos [I have a really big one (see my gallery if you wish)], I do not think this would be a good design. It would probably be nice as part of a larger tattoo, but I would not find it appealing as a stand-alone design.

Thanks, I was definitely trying to infuse as many details as I could in the line work, so I'm glad that worked for you. Also, I designed this for a friend who specifically wanted a few small flowers to adorn her shoulder blade, so the scale was custom tailored to that. But thanks for your feedback

Ah. As a small tattoo it would not be that bad, but I do not envy the tattooist who would have to replicate all of your detail.

Haha yeah that's fair. Definitely something to consider for the next time I'm working on a design specifically to be tattooed!

Hi I'm here from Project comment, And I just wanted to say that this is beautiful! The detailing is gorgeous, And I wouldn't be opposed to having something along the lines of this as a tattoo. I especially like the detail of the torn petal, Seeing as in nature nothing can be absolutely perfect. Very realistic. All-around a beautiful job! Have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much for this lovely comment! I feel like I always have an internal debate on whether or not to perfect petals/stems/etc. etc., and usually tend to hold true to the actual subject, so it's really refreshing to hear you say that Hope you had a wonderful day too!
