Description Another SW EU character, Barabel Jedi Master Saba Sebatyne. I grew to love this character throughout the NJO series--her strange sense of humor, her integrity and fierce loyalty to the Jedi and to Luke. When she became Leia Organa Solo's Master, completing the Princess' Jedi training in The Dark Nest trilogy, I decided I had to do a portrait of her. There were very, very few references out there for Barabels, so I used what I could find and then took lots of "artistic license!" This was the result!

Saba Sebatyne is one of my new favorite Expanded Universe characters. She first appeared in Star by Star of the New Jedi Order by Troy Denning. That is one of my favorite novels from last decade. As a matter of fact, for this coming Mother's Day, I thought about doing two busts in ink of her and her son, Tesar. Considering they're mother and son, albeit nonhuman ones, it all fits. Someone I met in person actually encouraged me to do the Mom's Day pic of Saba and Tesar. Don't worry, I won't forget to do it, and it's even on my To-Do List for May 2013. Very fine details you've got going for this drawing. Lizards are among my favorite reptiles as a bonus. I've seen plenty of fence lizards here in California, and the males have blue bellies while the babies and females don't have them or have faint blue markings. Oh, and the fence lizards also have a special protein in their blood that kills the bacteria in ticks that causes Lyme disease. The male fence lizards even do push-ups on rocks as mating rituals. On top of that, I've also seen alligator lizards. My mother freaks out at the sight of them, but I've heard they eat black widow spiders. I have no problems whatsoever with both species of lizard; I think they control our spider and insect populations.

Thanks for the informative comment--lizards ARE an integral part of many ecosystems, and yes: they DO help control insect populations! Glad you liked this piece, and thanks much for the , too--Saba is a great character, and your plan for Mother's Day sounds wonderful! Good luck with the drawings!

You're welcome. I have your pic in my favorites gallery as of now. You'll see my Saba and Tesar a few days before Mother's Day weekend. I'll do it on that week before the weekend and get it uploaded early. And thank you. You'll see!

I love this image of Saba. She is my favorite and been trying to find an image of her saber forever. So far yours is the closest I can to to one even though I'm assuming you designed this one yourself.

Thanks so much! You're right about the lightsaber--I had never seen an image of hers, nor read any narrative that described it; but since each Jedi Knight creates his or her own weapon, I made the assumption that Saba would choose a more "organic" style for her hilt--perhaps to honor her lost world, or to recognize the largely primal nature of her species. So it was my own design, but with a mind to what this unique and dynamic Jedi might possibly choose for herself. I very much appreciate the comment, and especially the !

I was trying to find a picture of one so I can purchase a close replica from Ultrasabers, and then modify it to fit hers. I'm going to be using yours as a template and work from there.

Its a silver saber, will probably get it powder coated a greenish color, with a blade leather cord wrap spiraling down it from emitter to pommel.

Will definitely do, especially since you inspired it.

I get my 3rd saber in tomorrow, and then I'll probably start setting up for the Saba saber in November/December. Have to go soundless on it for money purposes, but I think it'll be amazing.

Not sure if I'm doing a light green or a red powder coat, with a dark green dyed leather cord spiraling, with a red blade.

I'm flattered you like the portrait--I give my permission for your use, and just ask that you provide my dA username (FalconFan) with the drawing, as credit for its creation. Otherwise, no one knows who created it, and some might be inclined to nip it from your site and claim it as their own. Thanks!

I love her, too! Especially when she was Leia's Master as Leia undertook her final training to become a Jedi Knight--Saba is so wise, with such a quirky sense of humor! A great character, and one who hasn't seen much in the way of fan or pro-art--this was my own way of trying to somewhat rectify that oversight! Thanks so much for the , and for taking time to comment!

Thank you so much! Saba is such a great character, and I thought she needed a portrait as much as any Jedi Master...so I did one! The details of her scales might not be exactly as the written description of them, but I was taking a lot of artistic license with her, anyway, so I just put them down as I imagined them (basing them very loosely on the scant, undetailed references I could scare up, and some photos of lizards in general...). I'm so glad you like it, and thanks so much for the , too!

Brilliant picture of one of my favourite Star Wars characters. I've always liked reptiles and it's nice to, at last, see a heroic reptilian character (as opposed to the usual stereotype).

Again brilliant picture!

Thanks so much for the lovely words! Saba became one of my own favorite characters during the NJO series of books--and I completely agree that she's quite heroic! Her offspring also proved themselves as capable and honorable Jedi Knights--so her legacy will continue long after she becomes one with the Force someday (which won't, I hope, be for a long, long time!). I'm so glad you like this--thank you for taking time to look and comment!

"As important as Saba is, she doesn't get a lot of mentioning"

Indeed--I think that was probably the one thing I truly enjoyed in the Dark Nest Trilogy: being able to see more of Saba and how she trained Leia to Knighthood. Master Sebatyne really grew on me through the NJO series--her strange but wonderful sense of humor, her fierceness, her wisdom, her loyalty; I always loved the idea of such an instinctive being as a Barabel being able to harness the Force, control those primal instincts and develop the philosophy of a Jedi. To me, that demonstrates a tremendous strength of will, and makes Saba a truly fascinating character. So glad you like this (it's sort of my tribute to her! )--I very much appreciate the comment and the !

CanadianSith [2009-02-17 14:06:07 +0000 UTC]

I like the way you portrayed Saba here. I always thought of Barabels, especially the bounty hunting ones, as big strong creatures to match the Trandoshans. But, because Saba is a Jedi, it seems right that she is lighter and more graceful than the hunters.

I know what you mean about the lack of "official" pictures of the EU characters, but personally I like this- it lets all you talented artists out there fire up your imaginations without having to abide by an accepted version.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FalconFan In reply to CanadianSith [2009-02-17 17:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly, and I'm glad you like this--it was definitely a "pet project" for me, as Saba is one of my fave characters! I thought a lot about her physique when I started messing about with sketches--I know in our own natural world, female reptiles are usually larger and bulkier...but I suppose this final form came about due to my imaginings as I read about her: that she WAS oddly graceful and quick (and not just with the Force)--strong, but compact. Kind of like this... And I agree about being able to have "artistic freedom" with a character or species--it can lead to a LOT of wonderful versions, to be sure!

Thank you for taking time to comment--it's greatly appreciated!

"i just wondering which sabercolor she has??"

I did some research and was never able to locate the color of her lightsaber blade--but I always imagined it being green, a color that would always remind her of her homeworld of Barab 1... I'm not certain where you could look it up--StarWars.com might be a place to try!

Thanks for the kind words and for taking a look!
