I love the contrast between the sharp marks and the softer smudgy ones and the guidelines look good to me, I often like seeing lines and the mechanics of an image...
It'd be interesting to see how you'd do something like this really smudgy, maybe in charcoal! I can't help having a particular liking for charcoal, it's so nice and messy ...

oh dear, the maple leaf, yes. I wasn't really aiming for the patriotic effect zero-trois. but I guess it must have been subconscious. It's just my best leaf so far. you should see the other ones. yikes.
