The Story:
Azzie gave Sugar one last check over before vaulting into her saddle. This was the first show Beast had entered in his entire life and she was anxious to see how the stallion catherine had brought with her performed. The Obertaurer nickered a warm greeting to Catherine as she ducked out of the covered stall they had used as a changing room, buttoning up her borrowed riding jacket. Azzie grinned at her and nodded. Catherine smiled, though it was small and only half hearted.

"You'll do fine, Catty." Azzie leaned over and whispered to her. Sugar shifted under her in response to the change in Azzies position. "Besides this is only Sugars second show under saddle, so we're in the same boat." Catty simply nodded. It wouldn't do to remind her cousin, now, that she wasn't nervous about the show itself but being back in the saddle with everything to lose. Her stallion didn't deserve her failure and this was the first serious ride she'd had since... since- she forced the fire out of her mind and mounted up.

Beast snorted, turning his head to look at his rider, as though checking on her. When Alucard joined them, leading Checkers down the isle from the stallions temporary stall, Catty turned beast towards the show ring. "Everyone ready?" Alucard asked, hoisting himself into the saddle. Of all the horses Checkers had been the only one to have a hard time with the darkness. They'd practiced with the horses blindfolded and sweet and ever-ready-to-please Sugar had accepted it and trusted Azzie. Beast would have fallen off the edge of the world for Catherine if she asked him to so that was no here nor there but Checkers couldn't accept not seeing where he was going and the glow in the dark paint on his legs did not ease the stallions discomfort.

One by one they entered the ring, waiting until the one ahead of them had halted for the salute, with beast to the right, sugar moved in to the left and checkers joined them in the center. They broke away from each other, Beast going right, Sugar left, and Checkers straight to loop circles in and out of each other. Cutting in and out of their own paths they moved in unison though not side-by-side.

They were almost done almost and then it happened. Checkers bolted, squealing. he'd had enough of not seeing where he was going or what he was doing. Alucard reined him in and Catherine brought Beast to crowd him on the right with Sugar moving in on the left. The finished the performance in a sort of pinwheel motion and exited before anything else could happen with Checkers.

"Well, now we know he's not a night rider." Alucard grumbled.

"Oh no, he rides splendidly at night, Alu. Or... he always did with me. I'll have the vet check out his eyes since he didn't spook near that bad blindfolded and never once just at night." Azzie really didn't want to know what the vet might say about the young stallions eyes and hoped that it was just the stallion being cranky.
