This was a hunted man.
Thing is, he ALMOST got away. The blizzard that preserved him would have hidden him if he had been just a few minutes ahead of his pursuers. They got a lucky shot just before loosing him. They probably didn’t even know for sure if they’d killed him. If they had found the body they WOULD have taken his ax and probably his head. They chased him for at least 33 hours, and most likely for days prior. They wouldn’t have just left him lie.
