Description This is Kureha, [link] my OC as a pixel doll! Now she greets visitors on my DA userpage.

So I tried pixel art for the first time. And I don't know how these are displayed, but i think you can see it by clicking "download". I made her blink.
I didn't know what "pixel dolls" were. I've been seeing 's dolls, and she told me how she did hers.
So I went and checked out several sites, and decided to make the base for myself.
It's a completely different style, with exaggerated propotion often used for dolls. This isn't the style or proportion I usually work in, and I hope you see that.

It was actually easier than i thought. Though I lack patience to do intricate shades and details.
I'm going to try making one of my other OC, Kuchinagimaru.

EDIT: He's done. Here is her partner, Kuchinagimaru in pixels [link]

No base used. Made with photoshop elements.
colors on kimono is not by gradient. just slightly different colors painted next to each other.

Kureha=>foo-dog's character. Please do not redistribute.

Ooh! Very pretty. I'm not very familiar with the style, but she looks a little too skinny to me. *shrugs* But the detail on the kimono is fantastic!

you know i never draw my figures in this kind of proportion in my usual style.
Dolls seems to have a certain style and convention [link] like that, so I tried it for this first one. It's like betty boop, with large head and tiny bod. It's smilar to distorted proportion in chibi style, which I also never do.

I figured it was probably the style. I hate drawing chibi. It makes me angry, lol.

It would be cool to see her true form is it as passive as she is in this human like form or is it just as menacing as an angry snake?

foo-dog In reply to Bellmanart [2008-01-26 06:21:17 +0000 UTC]

I wanted something simple for immediate gratification, and I don't have the knowledge to do anything like that.
Plus, she doesn't transform, but her apparitions does, eight of them. These guys are bit different form the ones themselves transforms. She's just very well mannered and disciplined at all times like a royalty, and I don't see that as being passive. I don't imagine her to be like medusa or something, you know. It doesn't fit with her character I have in mind.

I love the base and the colors! Good job!
I would recommend not using gradients, it makes things look flat, the kimono is beautiful, it would look even better with some hand pixeled shadows and highlights.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foo-dog In reply to Dra-chan [2008-01-21 19:10:50 +0000 UTC]

i didn't use gradient. they are just picked colors of different shade, hand pixeled.

Foo-dog, there're really moments in life where I'm fairly assured you can do absolutely anything. Beautiful. I haven't tried makling the base myself: I'll have to do that one day.

kool for a first try I like the gradient shading with the different colors in the kimono

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foo-dog In reply to jasperfox [2008-01-22 00:43:21 +0000 UTC]

thanks. though it isn't done by gradient tool. it's just painted subtlely different colors next to each other. i had to try it.

I admit, i'm not too good at pixel art. I try, but I trend to throw my laptop across the room XD

it didn't take as much time as other stuff i do. though i think pixel art would drive me nuts if i had to do something elaborate. Too methodical.

That's amazing! A new talent for foo! It's very clever how her eyes blink too. Do you need a special program to do it? (I'm wondering cause I would think it's the same as for emoticons ) I look forward to seeing Kuchi too!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foo-dog In reply to inuaddict [2008-01-21 16:23:29 +0000 UTC]

actually you can do it on photoshop. i did it on photoshop elements i got with my tablet. all you need to remember is to keep all the layers "normal 100% opacity", and use the pencil tool only to draw. when you blow up the image to 600% or so you can see each pixel squares, and you lay out your colors like making mosaic.

But it's not as tedious as it sound. (well, depending on the project i guess) I just draw rough outline like i normally would and refine it by adding or removing pixels to it.

For animation, you treat each layer as frame, and save the file as gif.

Ah wow! That's awesome for a first time! Especially that you made your own base! If you ever decide to share them for others to use, let me know because I'd love to

And can't wait to see Kuchinagimaru dolled ^_^

your inspired me the dolls i saw were very small and didn't quite have the face i wanted, so i ended up making one. It was actually not as hard as i thought. (of course refining the shading would take some experience)

i may consider doing a "dress up" contest. i'll let you know.

Dolling is actually the first form of digital art that I got into. I used to do it with a mouse, but I enjoy using my tablet much more
