I'm not sure what made this piece happen... Maybe a caffeine driven emotional trip, maybe the music that I listened to... Most likely both... But the end result is something I'm genuinely proud of. I can't remember the last time I tried to capture and convey intense emotion to this degree. I'm quite fond of the graphic-novel-esque aesthetic that this one has, the contours and jagged lines of tense muscle. It feels more layered the more I look at it. Probably because this ended up having 45 layers in the end. 0.0There's some blood, but not enough to warrant a mature content filter, I think. If you think I'm wrong, just let me know. I'll change it.
Looking for context? I don't really have any. But I've decided that Tails is frantically clawing his way to help his wingman, leaving the golden promise of home and careening into the storm in a desperate attempt to save a friend. When a "routine" sky patrol becomes aerial hell, what other option is there? It's what any decent person would do, right?
Something I'd like to add: As this piece developed, I tried to incorporate some feelings and ideas that resonate with me personally. Looking at it now, I get a sense of uncompromising rectitude and honor emanating from the two tailed fox. His sacrifice to help another, at the expense of his own fear and pain, and possibly his life. It's something I think about a lot. It occurred to me that this is simply a dramatized circumstance that I face everyday in real life. Every tiny jab at my honor, every small temptation to stray away from what I know to be right... My morals, those are my wingman. So long as I live I will not stand to have them shot at and hurt. I will stand by them and defend them, just as any soldier would fight to preserve his brother. This idea of being right is so important to me. I hope it's important to you as well. To be right not because you want happiness or comfort or convenience, but to understand what is true, and actually good. And standing by that no matter the price.
Making this picture has been a really interesting self-examination. I've come out of this a little more motivated to stand tall and strong for what I believe in. Maybe you just see a nifty picture. That's totally fine. But I hope that maybe you think about what's important to you. Maybe think about what you would give to preserve that something. It's a tough question when you actually think about it. Certainly being right is not always glamorous and happy. Quite the opposite, if history is anything to go by.
I realize I made an essay out of a picture featuring a cartoon character in a situation he would never face canonically, but... Well. I said earlier this is important to me. I guess I went on kind of a rant, but I don't know. Maybe it was thought provoking?

Also if Tails' arm was shot, he likely wouldn't be able to move it, which would make it REALLY hard to land.

Judging from the massive holes in the canopy, I assume a piece of plexi-glass has made a new home in Tails' shoulder. Could be worse. Won't know till he gets back to base.

You ever considered making a comic? Your style is just beautiful! The emotion, the stress, the lust for good, and everything is all there. I also love the balance of "darker bloodier ages" and "the fight for good" here. Neither side here is too much or too little, just right.
The war riddled theme is very strong in this piece... the storm mixture with the fury color on the right represents the very turmoil the young fox goes through, pushing the tears out of his very eyes.
It's always hard to have justice and good in a burning and chaotic world... which is why you must give it your all to bring it... my boy, Miles... fighter in the skies, strong supporter of the heroes, believer in oneself... may no one dare say you never tried.

In Texas, I like to think we get some of the greatest sunsets on planet Earth. Tonight, the colors were exactly like this, and it felt really cool to see the same kind of sky in real life... Kind of a different tangent, but it was pretty neat.

This is actually fantastic. It's not only Tails fanart, it's Tails ART. It looks extremely professional and I see how dedicated you have put your blood, sweat and tears into drawing this.
I also enjoyed reading the text you wrote to this drawing and you really captured your own feelings very well into Tails' feelings in this situation while he is flying in his plane. It's not often that I see how artists feel about their masterpieces, and I liked it a lot to read your thoughts.
It also fits perfectly to Tails' character, who will always fight for his friends, no matter how hopeless the situation might be. Tails is always loyal and trustworthy, the perfect friend.
And who knows? Maybe one day it will become canon, at least not with the blood. Maybe even in Sonic Forces^^

I keep wanting Tails to have more of a fighter pilot role, mostly because I'm an aircraft fanatic, but also because in the OVA, there was so much detail put into the instrument cluster in the Tornado, and the plane felt old, auxiliary, and lived in. It also gives him more opportunity to display his true character, instead of hiding in his surrogate brother's shadow. The sky is his domain.
At least, that's my opinion. I would absolutely love to see some Tails kick-buttery moments in Forces. That would make my day!

That's an interesting and fitting interpretation of Tails' character! You're right, his plane in the OVA was surprisingly detailled and well constructed. Tails always had a confident side, even if he appears shy often. And in the sky in his plane, he can prove it the best, because he is in Control of the plane all by himself there.

For sure. I have many other projects that I'm working on, but for the last three days I've almost exclusively worked on this one, and I'm not sure why. I guess the mood carried on...
Anyway, I'd love to see Tails provide some kind of air support in Forces. And not the dumb kind where he gets shot down in the first five seconds. Lol Raining bullets and hellfire in the form of missiles from the skies...

Well, I can certainly say it's an amazing piece. I wish I could be more of an art connoisseur, and give a more in depth comment, but I really can't.
Tails probably will get some spotlight in Forces. I feel like at some point the Avatar is going to die or something, and Tails is going to take the Wispon in a final act against Eggman.
