Description A (wolf) body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by a force.  Anyway, this particular gray wolf exhibits inertia while resting beside a small stream.  The weathered and worn stone outcrop has been smoothed by the elements across the ages, leaving its surface as a solid place to stop for a moment.  The journey is long, and moments such as this when Lauren can interrupt the trek to observe the world around her are valuable.  My original character (OC) Lauren is a character in my novel-to-be titled "Transpecies."  You can learn more about this story from my gallery folder dedicated to it.  The latest draft of the first act of the story is available to interested readers for critique upon request.  Its one sentence pitch is that some cognitively enhanced animals seek sanctuary in a dangerous and uncertain future America.

This picture took a little more than 5 hours to create in Photoshop CC.  For once, I actually avoided importing any textures.  I made use of some brushes (such as the grass brush and another one used in painting the fur) that were created by KFCemployee .  Also, this Tutorial: How To Paint A Wolf was helpful in guiding my paint process for the fur.  Rather than the sharp selected outlines between fur colors like in my painting Vantage , I instead used the eyedropper to sample intermediate colors between different sections of Lauren's coat so that I could paint strokes of intermediate colors until regions of color seemed to blend into each other.  I also made use of the smudge tool, though I wasn't prepared to do away with lineart as the tutorial suggested.  I'm most satisfied with how I painted the face fur in this picture, and I'm least satisfied with the rock and water textures that I custom painted in the scene.  I'm pleasantly surprised that this picture took a mere 5 hours.  One recent goal of mine is to move toward more emphasis on characters and less emphasis on backgrounds.  Apparently, a side effect of this change in my art style is that I'm much faster at finishing pictures because backgrounds have usually taken me a very long time to complete.

Comments and critique are greatly appreciated.

Whoa the brush strokes in this are great! Way better than the textures you normally use.  I think Lauren would look even better if you tried going lineless. The apparent texture of her fur is really nice, but cut-off unnaturally when it gets close to the black outline.

Thank you!  I considered making it lineless, but I didn't think I could get away from the lineart delineating the muzzle and the chest or the border between the body and hind leg.  I'm glad that the fur painted with brush strokes worked in at least some parts of this.  I appreciate that you took the time to explain how I could have made the picture better.

I don't have much experience with this myself, but I think if you use some lighting tricks (like a slight glow on the side hit by light, and some shadows underneath anything that's supposed to protrude) you'd be able to create natural depth, removing the need for well defined borders. Probably easier said than done though, heh.

Wow, your painting style is phenomenal! I love the craggy texture of the rocks and the smooth flow of the stream, and your anatomy and fur textures are perfect ;o; Keep up the awesome work <3
