If you're not already watching chaiteaa , I would definitely recommend checking out her gallery! I've been a fan of hers for some time now and wanted to make a piece of gift art as a sort of tribute for all the inspiration I've drawn from both her art here and her animations on YouTube.

For this picture, I decided to use binary lineart (pencil tool) in Photoshop for the outline of Chai. I used a cel-shading approach to both the highlights and shading, where I kept a consistent opacity value for all the highlighted and shaded regions, respectively. As an extra challenge, I decided to create the entire background using only the pencil tool (binary lines) in all painting steps. I occasionally used the lasso tool to refine some shapes such as the cutoff of the snow cover and the rocks in the river. Using binary lines for lots of things (well, everything in this picture) seems to be a very efficient strategy that yields an unmistakably digital aesthetic. This composition took about 8 hours to make.

The Rocky Mountains have my favorite landscapes in all the world, and one might notice from my gallery that I like to paint backgrounds with lots of trees on distant hills and mountains. I used a reference photo from the Rocky Mountains to choose the colors and general layout of the background for this picture. I started with a walking pose canine reference photo and then adjusted the anatomy somewhat in an attempt to get the proper body shape for Chai, as specified in her reference sheet. Chai comes in two different color schemes, dubbed vanilla and spiced chai if I recall correctly. This darker brown color scheme is the spiced chai version.
