Description Texture Study, Watercolor, 15"x20", For Sale (Ask)

This is actually the first-ever watercolor I did back in February. You can see why I switched over. I was so pleased with this that I had to do more WCs. I took this photo in Asheville, NC at the Zoo!

Lovely piece.... The texture detailing is fantastic!!!! and the coloring is great too.
I've just done the cross over to watercolors. I still paint with acrylics and oils (a lot) but there's something about watercolors that has lured me in... I don't know if their appeal to me lies within the fact that they are indomitable and I can't completely control what the water will do... I'm still doing animals though... humans are still too complicated for me to attempt. Someday I'll do it but for the moment I want to hone my skills in perfectly.

Ironically the more you do animals, the better you will understand humans. Humans are like bricks, just layers in equal parts.

Watercolors offer a fun way to get spontaneous and loose and you can control quite easily if you want and the backgrounds cover up very nicely. I love the versatility and the way you can throw rubbing alcohol and salt on it!

Really? That is ironic..!

Watercolors are indeed very fun, you can try lots of interesting things with them!! And they don't smell!!! XD

Oh thank you, yes it was my first watercolor attempt however I was painting in oils and acrylics for four or five years prior to this one. I love painting and I think WCs are just as wonderful as the other two

Thank you, I was really worried that first night I started watercolor because I am so use to working from dark to light values. So for me this was a big confidence boost

frechstudios In reply to DavidHoffrichter [2011-05-22 03:15:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, that's what I thought too I can see why a lot of illustrators use watercolors. It's a great medium!

DavidHoffrichter In reply to frechstudios [2011-05-22 03:52:19 +0000 UTC]

Yea man. I love what you can do with it. You can really take it far, although sometimes not as far as you can with an oils. I use Acrylic Gesso to make my highlights. It really adds a pop. I never liked Gouache since it doesn't seem to stay put after awhile. Hopefully in the near future I will be posting oil paintings

frechstudios In reply to DavidHoffrichter [2011-05-22 04:36:25 +0000 UTC]

I think it all depends on what you're doing. I tend to think the water mediums are more diverse however a lot of oil painters will disagree. Either way, its about the final product and what gives you the best results. I have yet to try gouche and from what I hear, I do not have the energy to try try it at the moment.

DavidHoffrichter In reply to frechstudios [2011-05-22 17:51:17 +0000 UTC]

Yea man, couldn't have said that better myself. The marketer/designer in me always says: It's about the final product and not the technique that went into it that matters. That's why if you look at some paintings on deviant art, some truly beautiful paintings that much have taken 100+ hours to complete have under 20 favorites, and some drawings that took a high schooler 3 hours have 10k+. I'm not saying that favorites matter in the slightest, but it goes to show you that creativity and the idea behind the painting really make it stand out.

With that said though, I can't wait to sink my teeth into acrylics and oils more
