He spent the majority of his childhood in one of the buildings they restored, one of the Aizu Bukeyashiki. It was a historical samurai compound that was turned into a tourist attraction where one can watch performances put on by workers. These performances range from traditional dance to flashy combat sequences.

He didn’t like restorative carpentry and didn’t show much promise in spite of coming from a long line of carpenters. He used to be a shy and quiet child but when given the chance to have a role in one of the performances at the bukeyashiki it seemed as if all his inhibitions disappeared. He showed talent for acting in these performances, and given his build and looks he also had the potential to take on both male and female roles. Performing was something he enjoyed and took quite seriously in spite of his age.

The constant praise and attention he’d get for his performances made him quite prideful and vain. It made him rather uninterested in making friends with children his age. While not a victim of bullying, he was a bit of a loner at school. This all changed, however, when one of his classmates teased him for how he handled fake weapons during performances. He was told that it was hard to take him seriously because his form was awful and that he wouldn’t last 5 seconds in a ‘real fight’. Annoyed beyond his wits he signed up for combat training that very day to prove this insolent brat wrong.

As it turns out however, this insolent brat was the son of an eliminator and was also taking up training at the dojo he had signed up for. At the start of training he would often get his ass handed to him by the older students who seemed to pick on him because of his girlish features and reputation of being a pompous brat. He would try to fight back but the difference in their skills only seemed to become more apparent the harder he would try to fight back. Thankfully the brat that had insulted him (which he only then found out was named Kazue!) would have the bullies back off and help him out with training. Throughout the course of Ren’s training, he became close friends with Kazue.

As their friendship deepened, Ren learned about the rookie eliminator project, but was only interested in rooting for Kazue who was aiming to get in through his own hard work and skill. Kazue in turn became more interested in the performances at the bukeyashiki, but for some reason didn’t come to watch Ren’s performances very often. Every time that he would come to watch, it felt like a victory for Ren. A tiny victory, but a victory nonetheless. It was because of his persistence that he also blames himself for what eventually happened to his best friend.

On a seemingly normal day, on one of Ren’s performances an android was there to attack.

Spectators assumed that the attacking android was part of the mock combat performance at the bukeyashiki and thus it took a while before the incident was reported and eliminators were called to the scene. Thankfully most of people that were present were able to evacuate safely, with ones most severely affected only sustaining minor injuries. This was mostly due to the workers, Ren being one of them, successfully ushering the tourists and spectators to the safe areas as Kazue ,along with a few other grown men, attempted to hold off and distract the attacking android. Armed with only the wooden sword that they use for training, Kazue was lucky he didn’t die thanks to his heroic but ridiculously reckless actions. While still alive, he had to be hospitalized for quite some time due to his injuries. The incident left him with a debilitating injury, making it difficult for him to walk around without a crutch or a cane. This left him unable to continue training and missing his chance to get scouted for the rookie eliminators program.

Ren blamed himself for his best friend’s injuries and vowed to become strong enough to protect him and everyone else he loved. Since then he performed less and devoted most of his time and energy on combat training. While his grades and performance were now considered the best in their highschool, he’s still not quite up to par with the first batch of rookie eliminators, causing him to get wait-listed for the program.

Hobbies:

Acting: While no longer the main focus of his life, he still tries to take part in performances when he’s able to. He’ll also read out lines by himself as long as he has a copy of the script. Put into more practical use, he’s also pretty good at bluffing and improv.
