An easy-going person by nature, Hayato is the type that doesn't mind being on his own, rather content with his own company, however he is also just as comfortable in a group, surrounded by friends, meaning he can be both solitary, and a team player, given the right incentive. He can be both quiet and playful, depending on his mood, varying from saying very little and stuck in his own thoughts, to talkative and teasing, especially amongst those he is close to, mischievous with his friends where he can be more content showing his more whimisical side.
With strangers, Hayato can be a little indifferent at first, the accident having made him somewhat distanced from people to begin with out of concern he may make the wrong impression. He can also be a little hesitant and judgemental. Hayato can be quick to jump to conclusions, especially concerning things about himself where he may get the wrong end of the stick and misunderstand. Due to this, if he feels like he has been wronged, and he himself is right, he is definitely the type to argue his case. He does not back down easily during arguments, showing he can be quite an aggressive and temperous person once he is provoked.
Hot-headed by nature the moment his temper is spiked, Hayato is normally a reserved and passive kind of person, content to just watch and observe. However, he can also become his own opposite and become impulsive, irrational and very head-strong, though these are only traits he adopts when he loses his temper and he feels the need to be defiant. That said, Hayato can also be quite hard on himself when he acts out, and often feels guilty when he has been unreasonable. He will instinctively feel the need to make things right and apologise directly after, so he can try to be the better person. He is not content leaving his social connections in jeopardy.
For his friends who know him well, they will find that Hayato is a very loyal and dependable person, one who is both sensible and caring, his usual compliant nature making him both an affectionate and protective person, willing to stand up for those he cares for when it counts. That said, those that know him well will also often see that his warmer traits often make his colder ones that much more apparent. The closer he is to a person, the easier it normally is for his buttons to be pushed, and his temper to be triggered. This is because they know him well, so naturally, they know what his strengths and weaknesses are.
In terms of his studies, due to his nature of wanting to please others and make his parents proud, he can also be seen as rather dedicated. He wants to succeed, and so doesn't mind hard work in order to ensure he does so. That said, it doesn't mean that he won't ask for help if he truly feels he needs it, and he doesn't mind helping others either. If friends ask to copy his homework, chances are he won't mind, not like he would if a stranger asked, for instance. Then, he might say no, as he doesn't particularily like slackers who just leech off of those who work hard.

Background ||
Born in the city of Niigata, Japan, Hayato was an only child to a Chinese father and a Japanese mother. Slightly higher than middle class, the couple had been married several years before finally having a child. Hayato had a good and easy-going childhood. Though the small family lived in the city, their lives were uncomplicated and everything was going well. Hayato was loved, and as a child, he showed early signs of intellect. He was a quick learner, and in school he came to have good grades, as well as plenty of friends. He was a sociable child and often helped with the chores when necessary. He also visited his grandparents regularly. Overall, he was a good kid.
However, it was only during the latter end of his middle school years that Hayato began to notice subtle changes at home; ones that gradually became more obvious and questionable. His father seemed to become distant, and his parents spoke less. It turned out that after near seventeen years of marriage, the pair had slowly drifted apart, and, soon enough, Hayato was sat him down so they could talk about their situation. It was decided his parents would be filing for a divorce, something which, at first, Hayato found difficult to accept. It was hard, and for some time after, Hayato was full of distress. He became distant from his own friends and Hayato’s grades started to drop as a result. Though, luckily, Hayato’s father did not leave immediately at first. He wanted to ensure that the pair would be cared for beforehand. A part of Hayato was glad for this, but a part of him was also angry and, for unknown reasons, he blamed him, and that lead to arguments between father and son.
It was one such argument that lead to the accident which occurred when Hayato was fifteen. A car accident within the city whilst en-route to Hayato’s grandparent’s. An argument had started in the car and, after taking his eyes off the road for a mere few seconds, Hayato’s father had not seen the oncoming vehicle. Luckily enough, the collision wasn’t fatal, and the damage was minor. They had been fortunate, but the accident was enough to change Hayato’s outlook from then on. It made him realise how petty and childish he had been.
Not long after that event, Hayato’s father moved back to China, and the divorce between his parents finalised. Despite the circumstances, Hayato’s father still continued to send money to support them. However, the damage was already done. After years of poor attitude, guilt rested heavily upon Hayato's mind. He needed a change in scenery, and atmosphere. As such, his parents began discussing a school transfer -- a transfer to a boarding school full of children just like himself, with impure or international blood. Somewhere different, and somewhere with a reputation for good education. It was then that Jiyuu-no-Seishun came to light, and the idea was presented to Hayato himself, then sixteen. Naturally, it came as a shock at first, and the change was daunting but, Hayato agreed to his parents wishes, with hopes that it would be for the better, and it would mend the rift between him and his father.
Sponsored by his paternal grandparents, their wealth serving as his support, as well as their status in mainland China to get him a place, this was paired with Hayato’s former good grades, which had showed promise of being fantastic prior to his troubles. On the condition that he would be dedicated to his studies and not disappoint them, his acceptance was secured. As such, he was off and finally able to leave Niigata, as well as his troubles.
Starting off in his first year, Hayato found that the new school wasn’t so bad. Adjusting wasn't too bad. Slowly but surely he was able to come out of his shell again over the year, and things did start improving. His grades began to improve once more and Hayato became more serious and dedicated to his school work. It was something that, over the summer that followed, caused Hayato to be rewarded for his efforts -- with a long awaited trip to China to visit his father, and an opportunity to mend things officially. It turned out to be for the better, for he learned his father was proud of him, and that despite Hayato blamed himself for their accident, his father never had. It was something that gave him incentive towards succeeding in the new year ahead.
What he hadn’t expected was the change in leadership, and the daunting new changes it seemed were yet to come...a new and strange headmaster, with even stranger ways. He couldn’t be sure what would happen, but only time would tell.

- Father || Feng, Qiang Lei [ 馮强磊 ] || A privileged scientist in a well-known agricultural organisation. An understanding and kind-hearted man, he has always encouraged Hayato to do his best. Hayato is glad their relationship now seems to be back on track, and looks forward to visiting him again.
- Mother || Tamura, Natsumi [ 田村菜摘 ] || A calm and free-spirited woman, Hayato's mother lends a hand on his grandparent's rice paddy helping the other workers. Always on her feet, Hayato gets his dedication and perseverance from her, her endurance something he admires.
- Maternal Grandparents || Tamura, Haruto [ 田村陽斗 ] || Tamura, Kiyoko [ 田村清子 ] || Proud owners of a rice paddy, Hayato knows his grandparents well, and used to visit them often. They are not too fond of his Chinese heritage but for the most part he respects them and has learned to appreciate a simpler, more old-fashioned way of life due to their lifestyle. They also don't permit cellphones, so he had to make do.
- Paternal Grandparents || Feng, Yuan Hou [ 馮袁侯 ] || Feng, Yan Ling [ 馮艳凌 ] || Wealthy, all Hayato knows about them is that they live in Shanxi Province, in the city of Taiyuan, also known as 'Dragon City'. Hayato has never met them thus far, but he does know his grandfather was involved in some form of medicine career, though naturally he is retired now.

Trivia ||
- Has a slight discomfort towards vehicles since the accident. He still uses public transport, but he's wary of it now.
- The scar on his nose was gained from the accident. He can be a little self-conscious about it, given it's so obvious.
- Due to the similarities in Mandarin Pinyin and Japanese Kanji it's actually common occurrence for his family name to be misread as Hō by other Japanese, rather than the Mandarin Féng it should be. Hayato has gotten used to it and usually responds to either. He may correct the first though. Maybe.
- His Chinese given name is quite personal to him, given it's what his father calls him. He doesn't use it for school or any purpose other than formal documents so unless Hayato tells them, it's unlike any of his classmates would ever know it exists, unless they ask him, though he'd only confess he has a Chinese name, and not what it actually is, at least, not unless they're a close friend.
- Naturally, he speaks Simplified Chinese (Mandarin) and Japanese fluently. He usually refrains from speaking Mandarin around others though, so if he lets you hear him, or he goes as far as to translate a friend's name into their Chinese alternative so he can use it as a nickname, consider yourself important.
- He can actually play the Chinese bamboo flute pretty well, and he does have a nice voice when he sings, but he usually only does these things when he's alone, given they make him feel self-conscious. They're also things he does to relax, as they remind him of home.
- Hayato is actually stronger than he looks. Helping out a lot on his grandparent's rice paddy, he's quite toned up for his build, so if you ever need anyone to lift something that looks quite heavy, he's definitely fit enough to give it a good go.
