Jonathan Ford spent the first 3 days of the apocolypse buried under the rubble of his home. He is rescued by a small growing community worth of people who are travelling to D.C from the southern states in hope that some semblence of government and order has survived the bombs.
After months of walking, avoiding ghouls, cannibals, once good people turned scavenging raiders and all other various dangers from a new hell...they arrive and are left devastated.

(Radiation would have struck at this point...starting the conversion turning JOnathan into a Ghoul to later be known as Gizmo. But that's another story...)

Jonathan would have travelled with the exodus of people going to DC as he would have irregardless. But in the event of him NOT becoming a Ghoul, he would have stayed with the group and a young couple whom had adopted him as their own until they found a location suitable for shacking up in.
A beached Ship...
It provided suitable enough shelter and contained enough supplies to get the people settled before they would dare venture out into the ruins to collect materials.

Jonathan would no doubt stay around the young couple who took him in in the first place. They would have made very good role models for him, but somethings just aren't enough to change a person. Jon remained as bitter and aloof as he had always been through his childhood. He shunned most contact with most people and while he attended the 'Town meetings' which would be held every so often to keep up the illusion of civilization, he never truely cared much for anyone.

Survival would have been Jon's priority at all times. He looked out for himself and no'one else. But by his logic, the people who got the best means of protection were the guards. He signed up to the settlements Guard tacticians and explained his skills.
He was assigned as a mechanic but was given means to defend himself like most citizens weren't. He got grenades.

They did him little good in the end. While he would have been responsible for getting most of the ships electricals and hydraulics working again (which would take the groups MONTHS longer without him) he was pretty much unguarded and wasn't thought of much. It didn't help that nobody knew what Super-Mutants were...

Jonathan is sent up top to try and fix the ariel allowing for ship-wide messages to be sent both within and without of the ship as part of mass communication attempts with other settlements. It doesn't happen.
Amazingly, nobody (except his adoptrive parents) noticed he was gone for 3 days. The search party found him exactly where he was meant to be. His crumpled and mutilated body had been torn apart, his left leg missing and his organs splayshed across the upper deck as if the body had been thrown by a being much larger and stronger than any human.

He was 29.
