Ever since the idea that чернов was the reason Резнов defected from the USSR, he’s been growing on me...and it doesn’t help that he is my prized Togekiss >_<

I personally think Chernov survived his ordeal. He was still breathing and his name popped up when you looked at him.

Personally, I think he could have survived (and I think the game mechanics, as you say, make it seem like he did survive), but I think according to cannon, he died that day :C.
