Scene excerpts:
Pinkie Pie bounced up to Twilight Sparkle, smiling brightly as she offered her a cup of punch. "Here ya' go! It's my Summer Solstice Shimmering Seranaded Sanguine Super Special Slam Punch!" She giggled.
Twilight took a sip and an explosion of flavor danced across her palate, the essence of Summer summed up in every sweet flavor that came mind.
"It's delicious... look, I'm really sorry I was so abrupt earlier, but I've got so much I need to research before it's too-" She was cut off as the pink pony tugged her to a table full of gifts.
"Everypony got you something as a housewarming present! I sent a telegram to Canterlot to find out what kind of things you liked and what you could really use, but there wasn't hardly anyone who knew you so I managed to get in touch with Queen Celestia and she told me you loved to read and study, but I wanted to get you something besides a book since, DUH, that would be too obvious, and I wanted to get you something that would be super-duper special and unique to you and your name, so hey, Twilight Sparkle's your name, so I got a collapsible telescope that you can take with you anywhere and set up even on uneven terrain so you can stargaze and enjoy the stars and planets and moon and stuff!" She belted out the words at dizzying speed but her enunciation was so perfect there was nothing illegible.
It was a wall of information that suddenly slammed into Twilight with all the grace of that lazy pegasus she had to goad into doing her job.
"Why though...? We just met today. Why get me such a special gift...?" Twilight asked, both perplexed and in fact, suspicious.
"Why, to see you smile, silly!" Pinkie Pie said with such earnest cheer, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world to say.
Twilight felt a flutter in her chest and butterflies in her stomach. A feeling stirred deep in her heart and she couldn't identify it.
So because of that, she immediately hated the feeling and pressed it down. She had a prophecy to study...
--------
Twilight sourly watched Spike intrude once again to ask her to return to the party downstairs on the first floor of the library.
"Come on Twilight... It'll be good for you to live a little! Your shell is harder to crack than a dragon egg." The adolescent dragon scolded.
The unicorn shook her head. "You don't understand, Spike... But you've got an excuse. You're too young. Everyone else, even my teacher, the RULER of Equestria, can't see what's coming. It's endemic of the times, Spike! I'll bet if I could communicate to everyone just how grave our situation is, they would STILL be going to this stupid party! Everypony here won't leave me alone or take the hint that I treasure solitude to this constant, meaningless fraternizing!"
"Frater-what...?" Spike asked curiously.
"Chattering and partying while the world is getting ready to end!" Twilight hollered.
Spike balked under the verbal assault, but stiffened up. He had long had to take the role of keeping Twilight's hooves on the ground. "Twilight... look, do you remember that story you used to tell me to get me to sleep?"
"I told you a lot of stories..." Twilight murmured, throwing the covers back over herself.
"The story of Littlecorn, who was convinced the sky was falling after a prankster pegasus dropped a star ornament on her head? She was so sure and so certain that the world was about to end that she gathered up everyone she knew, everyone who would listen, and they all wound up getting gobbled up by the Ursa Major." Spike recited.
Twilight knew the story well, and she was one of the few foals in her younger age, years ago, who could appreciate the irony of the Ursa Major, a bear composed of night sky, to be the thing to end Littlecorn and her companions desperate bid to escape the fall of the sky.
"I guess you have a point..." She said tersely.
"See? It's all gonna be okay!" Spike said cheerfully, leaving the bedroom to return to the solstice festivities below.
Twilight turned over in bed, looking out the window shaped like a watchful eye. "I'm smarter than Littlecorn and this was no prank." She whispered to herself.
A frown furrowed her brow. "At least if I'm wrong, I won't have any friends I'll drag down with me."
------
"Family is important to you... isn't it, Applejack? How will you feed your family and Ponyville with no sun to nourish the trees?" Nightmare Moon purred as she stepped down from the center stage in Fillydelphia's Town Hall.
"Darned straight it is! Yer gonna starve everyone out, ya' nasty ol' nag!" Applejack spitefully snapped. "Then who's gonna enjoy yer starlit sky?"
Nightmare Moon looked offended... wounded even.
"Why, dear Applejack... You assume the worst of me! You need only ask me, recognize me as your one true queen and goddess, and I shall bless your orchard to drink of the moonlight and starlight." She said soothingly.
Applejack paused, hesitating, looking away.
"Applejack... you needn't fear one such as I. After all, were I your queen already, I would have saved your poor parents..." The dark mare said softly.
The palomino Earth Pony stiffened. "Th-That's hogwash..." She muttered.
"Hogwash is the excuses that filled the air every time my sister opened her mouth! You've seen her raise the sun, you've seen her move mountains, teleport vast distances and even heal the sick and wounded... but because she believes the laws of nature are more important than the lives of your parents who we both know were taken far too soon, they lie dead, buried and rotting." Nightmare Moon said. "Tell me... wouldn't you give anything to have them back? I know your honest heart, Applejack..."
"Y-Yes... ah surely would..." The farm pony whispered.
-------
"Rarity... why did you shear your mane and tail for... well... it was certainly very nice of you, and I could tell the rabbits were grateful for the warmth, but... you um... you really didn't *have* to..." Fluttershy timidly asked the now thoroughly bald unicorn who, in spite of her now unseemly appearance, continued to trot along with the full grace of one trained in professional dressage step, never losing the omnipresent, regal bearing. A royal in rags.
"Why Fluttershy... because they *needed* it! And I, having the most well-maintained mane and tail of the group, was the natural choice to give it." Rarity said matter-of-factly.
"But you look really funky now..." Rainbow Dash with her famous bluntness, blurted out.
Rarity let out a tiny, ladylike snort of derision. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my dear Rainbow Dash."
"Uh, okay. I behold one funky looking pony! Heh heheheh..." The sky blue pegasus giggled.
"There's suffering, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash... Every day. And I know the natural laws. I know our Lady and Savior, Queen Celestia, cannot simply wish our woes away. We would be helpless and dependent as foals! So I do everything I can to make great wealth to make myself comfortable and to, of my own volition, spread the comfort to others."
"Sh'yeah... you just wanna beat that rich pony, unicorn guilt out." Rainbow scoffed.
"I don't do it for self-gratification! You can leave *that* kind of charity to the stuck-up and not-so-fabulous minority of the upper crust." Rarity retorted.
Rainbow Dash sighed. "But what's the point? You can't help everypony..."
Rarity stopped and turned to face Rainbow Dash. there was no anger in her beautiful blue eyes, but instead, patience and understanding. "And I don't have nearly enough hair to give to all the animals of the forest... but to that family of rabbits back there, it made all the difference in the world."
------
Luna cowered at the golden-shoed feet of her sister, whose radiant wings were spread wide, her expression unreadable...
She knew she was about to die. A thousand year in the moon had only deepened her hatred towards the world and her sister... And Queen Celestia was known as a master strategist. Plans within plans. She could arrange situations in such a way that no matter the outcome, she would win. There was only one sane choice now... to obliterate the treacherous little sister.
"Queen Luna... it has been a millennia since I've seen you..." Celestia said, no emotion in her voice.
'I'm going to die... no... this is good... I deserve this... I betrayed my people... my sister... I learned nothing... Let the kingdom slay their monster... let them sleep soundly for once... let them kill their devil... this is good... this is right... this is the only thing left I can offer my little ponies...' She thought to herself.
"Can you forgive me...?" Celestia asked, her voice, her facade, all of it... cracking like glass.
"Wh-What...?" Luna choked, unable to stand, her eyes filling with tears. 'No! Please no... Don't show me mercy... sister, I don't deserve it... be strong for our people... eliminate me...!'
"Will you accept my friendship once again, dear, sweet Luna...?" Celestia whispered, her own lips trembling. "I missed you so..."
Those words hung in the air, the tension palpable enough to cut with a knife. A thump was heard from Pinkie Pie as she leaned too far, tripping, shaking it off with a sheepish giggle.
Those six ponies who could have sent her back to the moon had instead flung the ancient artifacts aside and showed her mercy. The purple unicorn told her that sending her away would just delay things until the cycle began again. And the others, who she had tried to murder and deceive, had all shown her not only mercy, but compassion and understanding... It broke her heart and it gave her sister the opening she needed to escape her prison.
And now she too was showing her compassion...
'No Luna... be strong... attack her, but don't hurt her... show her you deserve to die... show her you need to be destroyed... oh Faust above us, I cannot bear this kind of guilt...!!! Please sister... I love you so much... destroy me...'
She flung herself up and charged towards her sister, who made no move to evade her. Luna swept up against her sister, nuzzling her head under her neck. "I... I missed you too, sister...!!!" She cried out, weeping openly. "I'm so sorry... I'm so deeply sorry..."
'NO!!! OH NO! Why can't you see I'm no good, sister? Why am I so weak I can't even make a good monster to slay?! It is a sin for me to be alive...'
Celestia drew her sister close, kissing the top of her head, a wing protectively wrapping around the smaller, midnight blue alicorn...
"I love you, sister..."
"I love you too..."
