My Grandmothers brother was an engineer at Edwards on these two... even snuck me a photo of the 16 many many years ago.

Sorry, they are NOT in use today. The 2 YF-17's that were built are in museums. The YF-16 pictured above is hanging from the ceiling in a museum in Virgina.

Yea That's why I said updated to modern variants I know these test beds no longer fly. So YES they are in use today only one is known as the F-18 and the other is the F-16. Without these birds they both would not exist.

My mistake. It reads as if those two aircraft pictured were updated. The word 'variants' was not used. Thank you though, I do know where the F-18 and F-16 came from.
