Description Where to start.......Took this on Dec. 8th of '05 the day we had our ice storm. I went out in search of goodies to take pics of like icicles etc. things that are just really rare here in central Texas. While out canvassing my yard I found this ladybird/ladybug on our trampoline amongst the ice, so needless to say I took advantage of the oppurtunity. I spent a couple hours outside taking pics of her trying out different shutter speeds etc. trying to get the best pictures I could using the natural lighting. I took in all 250 pics of her in different positions and different shutter speeds and apertures. I waited so long to submit only because I could not make up my mind as to which one was the best.
Btw.......I thought this poor ladybird/ladybug had froze to death but, after I brought her inside along with the acorn husk (I didn't want to leave them outside just in case I wanted to get more shots) she thawed out and went on her merry way about my house .
Another tidbit of info. these were the last pics I got before my Canon died between the 7th & 8th of Dec. I took 728 pics of the ice storm.........no wonder it went on strike Hopefully next week I can put it in the shop

Great capture Kirsten .. well spotted too! I love the ice crystals in this and the acorn gives it all such a good sense of scale .. people tend to forget just how small ladybirds are!

Yay! The red ones have a tough enough time as it is without nature itself working against them.

Poor little ladybug! At least the story had a happy ending!

This shot really brought a smile to my face because I used to live in the Buffalo, NY, area, so I know what it's like to have to hunker down during storms of ice and snow.

This is a wonderful shot!!!

I was really tickled when she started tooling around my desk

Thank you so much I have always lived in non-snowing climates at least during the years I remember So I can not imagine what it must be like but just once I would love to see it snowing.

I'd never think something that size could survive the cold but I once had some pet waterbugs freeze solid and all but one survived when I revived them under tepid water.

Great shot! I really like how it almost looks full size with the acorn cap and all.

Me either I was floored when I looked over and seen her tooling around my desk. You know we had a tadpole in an aquarium out front (we were trying to get some algae to grow) well we forgot about the poor thing and its' water froze solid. I thought for sure we had killed it but surprisingly it thawed out and sterted swiming

Thank you

does a camera go bad if you take to many shots within a short period of time? or did it brake from something else? i really like the contrasting colors...the ice against the redish ground....
it looks like the ladybug's little home

I like the detail of the ladybug & acorn husk, and of the ice surrounding it. I think it's a pity though that the foreground is blurred - maybe some cropping will help, as it is a bit distracting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GeodeLady In reply to cblue [2006-01-31 16:16:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I have another shot I will be submitting soon where the foreground isn't as out of focus....I hate to crop pics I am just not good at it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cblue In reply to GeodeLady [2006-01-31 16:21:46 +0000 UTC]

That's why I try out different variations. If I don't like it, I come back to it a few days later. Sometimes cropping makes the composition flow better - like leading the eye. We all tend to centre things, yet it's the ones off-centre that really attracts the eye.
I still think it's a good shot though

GeodeLady In reply to cblue [2006-02-01 06:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I am horrible about centering kind of an anal thing......I am the type who will straighten peoples pics that are crooked in their homes

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cblue In reply to GeodeLady [2006-02-01 06:27:43 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I'm like that too - perfectionist tendencies
but eventually we learn to just balance things - and sometimes being off-centre = balance

GeodeLady In reply to cblue [2006-02-01 07:01:03 +0000 UTC]

I agree just need to whack my head sometimes to remember that

The next one of her isn't centered and to be honest it is my favorite

That's one great shot, Kirsten. The ice and ladybugs are so seldom seen together plus the composition just rocks.

Glad to hear the lady was still alive. I like those buggers a lot.

Thank you so much Yes, it is I remember about a year after we moved here we had a huge ice storm....omg it was the most beautiful thing I had seen ( I lived in the deserts of Az for 25 years and you never get ice storms there) Anyways everything was covered huge icicles everywhere from the electric pole lines to every plant and house just draped in an ice wonderland. I remember trying to see it all and commit it to memory (before I had a digi camera and of course my film camera had no film ) I have been patiently waiting for another such storm so I could capture it....but well it ain't gonna happen this year and we won't be here after June so guess I will just have to rely on my memory of it.
