As always, wonderful. "Simpler" than I'd expected (in that there's a lot less embellishment etcetera) but just as gorgeous.

I think it's safe to say that your inked illustrations have achieved a new plateau, Bob. This image is simply wonderful.
I see what seems in all respects to be a new arc of approach, or ability, coming out in your work since you lived in China. It's not jut about technique, either. Your work now seems more purposeful, more according to your will. As if the maker of these works has reached a point where there is very little about which he us unsure, to any degree.
I would say your time there was good to you, and good to your art.

Thank you. I had to think about that for a moment! I do, however, agree with you. The first year in China was pretty much a wrap, art wise, because everything was so new; the culture, the students, the language, the girl (who I married, lol). But one think I did do was study a lot of Chinese paintings. Just around the corner from where we lived was an artisans street, filled with galleries and shops featuring huge ink paintings (many were six feet long), and I would go browse them on almost a daily basis. Eventually, I delved into the techniques that it took to do traditional Chinese ink painting, which, in a very real sense, taught me not to be afraid of ink wash, lol.
It really wasn't until my last year there that I started to form a synthesis of the previous two years. Here's the link between the two: [link] Doing this project helped me in so many ways, most of which space does not allow me to elucidate on here.
All in all, I'm trying to do a fusion of the two techniques, and will be exploring it further as time goes on. Some will have fantasy subjects, some may not. This week I'm taking time to finish up the current ten illos that this group belongs to, and then it will be time for a break as I meet my wife in Thailand for the latter half of July as we wait (and wait and wait) for her U.S. permanent residence visa to process. When I get back, I'll start looking to expand the process a little more. As to the direction? Well, we'll let the muse decide when the time arrives. But, yes, at this time, I am satisfied with the current level of work. Thanks for looking, as always. Your observations help me to sort things out.
