Oh! Nah, it's just their cycle of foliage. The stems reach a certain age then die. There was a mixture of new and old insect eating tubes!

Great name! For some really bizzare and unexplainable reason this reminds of the seagulls in nemo squarking 'mine!' 'mine!'

Thanks, I took this with a telephoto lens, standing back about 3 meters. It adds great background blur and DOF. Standing there holding a big camera, pointed at some small flowers, I got many strange looks from other visitors. I'm sure they were thinking "I bet he's compensating". Beats their crappy point and shoot cameras any day!

Don't underestimate the number of times someone calls out to about 'compensating'. I react by taking a photo of whoever calls out... usually shuts them up.
